Bug[edit]
I added a note about being unable to complete the quest because of a bug. I got the helm from Yngol Barrow. It probably doesn't matter, but it might.
I then removed the note. I started to find other odd things happening, such as when I was stealing an item for a quest, which never showed in my inventory, but was missing after I took it, but showed the quest marker still where the item was, other dialog options that I could pick, but acted as if I hadn't. I saved and exited the game some time later. When I restarted, every action I'd taken happened immediately upon startup (notices that an objective had been completed, purchased items indicated gold removed, etc). - I had the exact same thing happen (PC; helm from Yngol). Re-logging fixed it for me to. 83.81.131.135 04:40, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
- Ditto. When getting the helm from Yngol (PC), the button in the final chamber failed to function for me. Then, upon returning to the jarl, he gave me the speech for returning the helm but did not actually take it. Speaking with him again, he gave me the quest to help people. I'd already done so, so talking to him again, he gave me the speech for becoming thane but didn't reward the blade. Stupid hat. Reloading the game from the autosave before talking to Jarl Korir solved everything. It looks like a quest I had previously picked up (a bounty in another hold) was stuck, loading the autosave flushed that quest and then everything worked like normal. Replacing Jarl Korir[edit]
The current version says that if you equip the Helm of Winterhold, a dialogue option will appear allowing you to end the quest, but that wasn't true for me. I tried talking to Korir, but he just told me to go away, then I talked to another person in the room, then when I returned to Korir did the dialogue open and I finished it. I never equipped the Helm... But I am fully unaware of why Korir all of a sudden decided to let me talk to him... Willman 04:38, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
can repeat this quest infinitely[edit]
I've gotten this quest four times now.
The first time, i got the blade and told to help peopel to become thane. i talked to him again and did the winterhold helm quest again. then i managed to help 3 people, and became thane. did the lem quest again. and then again - the fourth time, this time i was directed to yngol barrow.
Haven't done the fourth one yet. but seems like i'll be able to repeat this quest infinitely. — Unsigned comment by 208.198.0.57 (talk) at 03:47 on 12 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yep, I came on here to report the same thing, only I've been pickpocketing the helm back from him to save the trips. You can't immediately reaccept the quest, but the wait time isn't too long from my experience. A few days away from the hold and the Jarl's ready to send you after the helm once more. — Unsigned comment by 24.247.177.201 (talk) at 03:45 on 24 December 2011 (UTC)

- I believe this is because of Bethesda's infinite sidequests algorithm, allowing you to re-do quests more than once. I myself have killed like a few bandit leaders, who were in fact just 1 person, which I killed already. (No idea, if it is possible to get the Helm quest again, which directs to Driftshade Refuge, the first location of the Helm and also the quest location of one of the Companion quests (glitch)) — Unsigned comment by 91.115.158.112 (talk) at 21:32 on 24 December 2011 (UTC)
- You must store the helm somewhere after you pickpocket it in order for this to work, as once the quest is available again, the helm immediately becomes a quest item (even if you haven't started the quest again yet), and upon reaccepting the quest, the helm is removed. Note that it will still say "Helm of Winterhold was removed" but it appears to only be able to do so if you're carrying it. — Unsigned comment by 24.247.177.201 (talk) at 16:11 on 28 December 2011 (UTC)

- Cause of this problem noted. After doing this quest the script to become Thane did not execute. I received no appropriate responses or follow up dialogue from the Jarl. Then after several more hours of unrelated game play I returned to speak to him and the helm quest was given again. It appears that his script is bugged. Sniffles 20:04, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Fixed?[edit]
I play on the 360, and I just updated to 1.4 yesterday. I used to be unable to complete this quest and Korir would just keep telling me I wasn't supposed to be in there, but after updating, I was able to finish it. Can anyone confirm if this bug has been fixed on other platforms? Penguin0719 02:41, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- This was indeed a good question, but now 1.4 is in the distant past and it never got answered. Pity, it would have been good to know. --Morrolan (talk) 23:00, 1 April 2013 (GMT)
1.6 Update Beta[edit]
As of the 1.6 update beta which was released in late May 2012, this glitch is still prevalent. Console commands can help the problem or make things worse depending on the situation. — Unsigned comment by 98.251.6.249 (talk) at 23:31 on 2 June 2012
- Which glitch are you referring to exactly? There is more than one bug listed on the article and talk page. ABCface◥ 02:06, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
Can't speak with Korir.[edit]
So I was doing the Companions quest Purity of Revenge, but I can't start it because of this quest. I try doing this quest, but because I have started the College of Winterhold quest when Winterhold is destroyed, I cant speak with Korir, meaning that I cant do the Helm of Winterhold Quest, meaning that I can't do the Companions quest. What should I do? Thanks for any help. — Unsigned comment by 86.145.155.10 (talk) at 20:04 on 6 June 2012
- You need only ask once. He moves to Brunwulf Free-Winter's House in windhelm if you completed the Imperial reconquering here. The Silencer has spokenTalk 19:29, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Yngol Barrow[edit]
Please add the notes on how this quest and Yngol's Barrow interact. Specifically: 1) can you do Yngol's Barrow when you have this one active? 2) can you go back and revisit Yngol Barrow to do Yngol's Barrow once you're done with this one?

Bug - no option to start the quest?[edit]
I have a bug where their is no option for me to start the quest. I tried using console commands to force the quest to start which did not work. — Unsigned comment by Lolzrolf (talk • contribs) at 22:43 on 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- I seem to have the same bug as whoever reported this before, though I have not tried yet to start it via console. Shall I put it on the page? Vidian (talk) 00:58, 8 March 2013 (GMT)

- I, too, am encountering this bug now. I was thinking it had something to do with being a member of the college but others have reported that they became Thane after becoming Archmage. I even went to a much earlier save, one which I haven't been to Winterhold yet, Korir gave me the option to do the quest and I exited the dialogue(did not accept or refuse) went and gained admittance to the college went back to Korir and the option to do this quest wasn't there anymore. After a little bit more experimenting it seems that once you take the tour of the college the dialogue option disappears. Maybe it reappears after you become Archmage, if you haven't talked to the Jarl yet. I will see if it comes back after I become archmage but I've already spoken to him so it may be futile. (edit) Went back after becoming Archmage, still no option to start this quest. I don't believe this is really a bug though. My thinking is Korir clearly states his dislike for mages and the college so if you do not accept the quest when it is first presented and are already a member or join then it intentionally disappears. I tried looking in the CK but can not make heads or tails of what the dialogue checks for. Kevinx (talk) 04:16, 24 April 2013 (GMT)

- Had the quest not show up as an option after entering and completing the College, got the Coral claw from Birna and went to Yngol Barrow. When I returned from Yngol, I found the Jarl in The Frozen Hearth and he now offered the quest. No clue what exactly kicked it over (whether it was going to Yngol or him being in the tavern), but maybe this can give someone else some idea if they run into this glitch. --Dragos Drakkar (talk) 04:58, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
