Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Starting the Quest[edit]

To begin the quest speak to Sun-in-Shadow in Tel Aruhn directly after she being teleported outside the tower at the end of the previous quest or speak to Arith Sendrul on the docks in Sadrith Mora. Both mention that you should stop by Sun-in-Shadow house when you have the chance.

If starting the quest in Tel Aruhn:

"I always thought my worst humiliations were behind me. I guess I was wrong."
Are you all right, Sun-in-Shadow?
"Yes. Well, I will be. Languishing in Gothren's slave pens just … it took me back to darker times. Reminded me of the risks, and my good fortune up to this point. Perhaps I've been pushing too hard.
I have a great deal to think about."
What will you do now?
I'll return to Sadrith Mora and continue my studies. Talk to Eoki. Bury myself in a good novel.
Come and visit. It would be great to just sit and talk for a while, as friends. I still owe you that cup of tea, right?"
All right. I'll try to drop by.

Sun-in-Shadow will then leave Tel Aruhn.

If you do not start the quest with Sun-in-Shadows immediately after the previous quest you can start it by talking to Arith on the docks in Sadrith Mora:

"Ah, we meet again! By the Three, my rights and duties.
What brings you back to Sadrith Mora? In town to further your friend's ambitions? Again?"
Perhaps. How's the life of Gothren's new Mouth?
"Splendid! Now that he's finished grieving for that harpy, Ralasa, I mean. He even paid me a compliment! Something like, "I suppose you're not totally useless." It's a start!
I won't keep you. I'm sure you have much to discuss with Sun-in-Shadow."
Yes. I think I'll stop by her house to check on her.
"Now I just need to find a good herbal tea. Let me tell you, the work of a Mouth is hard on the throat."
Arith Sendrul: "Do give my regards to Sun-in-Shadow. Farewell!"

Dispute[edit]

As you enter Sun-in-Shadow's House you find Eoki berating her for the recent events including the return of the Khajiit slaves and the deaths of the miners in Zalkin-Sul.

Eoki: "You return escaping Khajiit to that beast, Gothren, and now I hear about our egg-kin crushed in the Zalkin-Sul mine? I thought I understood you, but I do not."
Sun-in-Shadow: "Eoki, wait! I'm trying to be strong enough for the both of us …."

Speak to Sun-in-Shadow. She is worried that Eoki has lost faith in her and may be planning an escape attempt. She asks you to talk to Eoki:

"Eoki berated me because the Zalkin-Sul cave-in killed some miners.
You stole the prism to save us from Magister Gothren. I suffered humiliation in a cage while you did what was necessary. Is that so wrong?"
Are you surprised that Eoki's upset about the deaths of other slaves?
"No, of course not. I care deeply for Eoki. I want to help him, but I can't save everyone.
I serve House Telvanni. I am Telvanni. He must understand that the House traditions may bend, but they will not break. I've never seen him so angry."
Do you think he's planning another escape?
"I certainly hope not, but if he's lost faith in our plan, anything's possible.
Eoki won't listen to me, but he might still heed your counsel. Would you talk to him? The magisters will only tolerate so much defiance. If he makes another attempt …."
I'll talk to him.
"Thank you for talking to Eoki. I only hope that he'll listen to reason."

Head to the docks on the west side of Sadrith Mora and speak to Eoki. Eoki is planning an escape and asks that you assist him. Eoki asks you to bring a payment to the Ropefish smugglers who are facilitating the escape of Eoki and many other slaves. He warns you to only give the payment to his contact Atarga.

"I knew she would send you. Know that I do not blame you for your role in all this. We are, both of us, victims of Telvanni lies. This place deadens the soul—pure and impure alike.
Now let me guess. My heart sent you to counsel patience, yes?"
Yes. She's worried that you might do something rash.
"No Saxhleel reaches for a branch beyond their grasp, but all the waiting, all the compromises …. My patience rushes down river.
My companions and I must get a message to the Ropefish. Will you help?"
Who are the Ropefish?
"The Ropefish are people smugglers, led by an Orc named Khartag. I had hoped to work with him directly. Unfortunately, we must deal with one of his lieutenants—Bothamul.
You must deliver the message before our distraction can begin."
I can deliver a message, but what is this distraction you're talking about?
"We can discuss the distraction soon. First, we cast the lure and hook the fish.
Go to the Inn and look for an Orc named Atarga. Approach her, say "Vassamsi Mine," and give her this payment. Deal only with Atarga. Hist protect you."
I'll deliver the payment to Atarga. Before I go, though, have [sic] some questions
"Ask what you wish, but speak quickly. I feel the slavemaster's eyes on me."
Can you tell me about this Vassamsi Mine?
"It is a forgetting place, where the noblest slaves labor until they die.
That beast, Gothren, hires thugs and murderers to guard it. They whip, and kick, and curse without restraint. Without mercy. We aim to free those slaves."
Were you ever sent there?
"If I were, we would not have met. No one ever leaves Vassamsi. Even so, some of my friends are imprisoned there.
I thought if Sun-in-Shadow freed me quickly, I could snatch them up on the way out of Vvardenfell. Now I see that she does not care."
I know she cares about you.
"There was a time when that made a difference, but now it does not. My spines wilt at the idea of leaving her, but she does not understand me.
Slave-born Lukiul cannot hear the Hist. She does not know me. She does not even know herself."
Can we trust the Ropefish to do their job?
"They have a good reputation for getting the job done, as long as you have the gold to pay. Bothamul asks a high price, but we have few choices."
How can you afford to pay him?
"We pooled our resources. Many small fish can feed a whale, yes?
The Telvanni see us as beasts—almost too stupid to push a broom. We use that to our advantage. I never thought I would be a thief, but given the circumstance, I feel no remorse.
Who is this Atarga?
"The primary contact between the slaves of Sadrith Mora and the Ropefish.
She drinks like an eel, but we trust her. That is more than I can say for some of the other smugglers around here."

If you talk to him again before heading to the inn:

"Leaving Sun-in-Shadow drives a spine through my heart, but she thinks herself free already. I wish she could see that she bears heavier chains than I do."

Business Affair[edit]

Head to the Gateway Inn on the east side of town. Inside you will notice that Atarga is extremly drunk and her two compatriots Hazbur and Lagdabash send her upstairs to sleep it off.

Atarga: "This stuff is good! Soooo-jamma. Sujamma!"
Hazbur: "Uh, maybe you've had enough sujamma."
Lagdabash: "How much has she had? Sujamma kicks like a bow-legged echatere. Let her sleep it off."
Hazbur: "Come on, Atarga. Aim for the stairs."
Atarga: "So many stairs …. Wait. I was supposed to do something."

Speak with Lagdabash. She offers to take the gold but you make it clear that your directions were to give it directly to Atarga. Lagdabash tells you to bring it to their boss Bothamul near Tel Ahrun.

"I don't like drinking with strangers. Tusk off."
I need to speak to Atarga.
"Atarga's drunk as Sanguine on Sundas. Won't get nothing but puke and bad jokes out of her.
She told me why she was here. Dragging a few slaves cross the border, ay? You give me the payment and I'll let the boss know. Savvy?"
I was told to only deal with Atarga.
"Fine. Lug that gold to Bothamul yourself. No skin off my tusks. Camp's near Gothren's place. Tel Aruhn. I'll even mark your map, seeing as we're fit to be partners soon.
Keep your gob shut about Atarga getting sauced, ay? One headache's enough."
Fine. I'll find Bothamul.

After finishing speaking to Lagadabash when you go to leave Sun-in-Shadow will enter the inn.

Sun-in-Shadow: "My friend, over here!"

She asks you if you have spoken to Eoki. You can either tell her the truth that Eoki is planning an escape or lie to her and tell her that nothing is amiss.

"Well, this is a coincidence. I came for a bottle of dry white. What brought you here? Have you spoken to Eoki yet?"
Were you following me, Sun-in-Shadow?
"No! Yes. Forgive me. I just couldn't keep pacing around the house, gnawing my claws.
Is Eoki all right? What did he say? He's not planning to do something foolish, is he?"
He and some others are planning another escape. It begins in the Vassamsi Mines.
"Vassamsi? You mean Gothren's slave-prison? What in the name of—? I know he distrusts me now, but you can't let him do this. If the truth of our relationship gets back to the Council ….
I'll go to the mine. Maybe I can talk him out of this"
Be careful, Sun-in-Shadow.
[Lie] He seemed fine. I doubt he's planning anything.
"I see. Well that's that, I guess. Once he cools down, I'll plead my case again.
I can't fight the House traditions all at once. But perhaps, with time and effort …. I just need more time. He must understand that."
Of course. I hope it works out.

She bids you farewell.

Sun-in-Shadow: "I won't keep you."

Upon reaching the spot Lagadbash told you to go she and Hazbur will ambush you trying to steal the gold.

Lagdabash: "Should've given me that gold at the inn, runt!"

Kill them and then read the note nearby. Bothamul's camp is just north of where you are. Speak to Bothamul when you reach the camp. Give him the payment and then head east and speak to Eoki.

"Yeah? You need something? If not, you might want to clear off. We're doing a little business here, and it ain't exactly legal."
I'm here to deliver a payment. Atarga was indisposed.
"Indisposed? Fancy talk for drunk as a boiled owl, right? Mauloch's jawbone. She loves her drink, but she always stays sober on the job.
Something stinks here. Maybe we should call this off."
Two of your people got her drunk and ambushed me on the way here.
"Lagdabash. I'd bet my left tusk on it. I hope you gave her and that witless pig, Hazbur, a good kick in the teeth. We're better off without them.
So let's get on with this. You with Eoki and his friends?"
Yes. Here's the payment, as promised.
"Good. I should ask for a lot more than this. Vassamsi makes the inside of a wamasu look homey by comparison. But a deal's a deal, eh? Tell Eoki we'll be there as agreed.
The mine's east of here. Just steer clear of Gothren's thugs, all right?"
"Get a move on. Eoki's waiting for you."

Operation[edit]

Eoki and his companions plan to save the slaves working at Vassamsi Mine. Eoki explains there are two ways to do so. Rihnissi wants to use smoke bombs to incapacitate the guards. Azri wants to kill the guards. You can choose either approach.

Eoki: "There you are. I knew you would not abandon us"
"Your presence warms my scales, egg-friend.
Our companions in the mine know we are coming. We equipped ourselves as best we could. Now, we strike."
What's the plan?
"First, we must deal with the guards—especially the ones who linger near the entrance. If they raise the alarm, the slavemaster will descend on us like a hungry hackwing.
Rihnissi thinks we should knock them out. Azri suggests we show no mercy."
How does Rihnissi plan to knock them out?/What was Rihnissi's suggestion?
"Rihnissi acquired a crate of powder bombs. Toss one near a guard and they should fall unconscious. Killing less guards might lessen the magisters' fury, making it easier to escape, but who knows?
Free our friends and watch out for the guard captain."
That seems simple enough. I'll try that.
Azri wants to kill all the guards?/And Azri just wants to kill them?
"Azri spent many long weeks in the dry-box beneath Tel Aruhn. Some of his closest friends died here in Vassamsi. His spines bristle with thoughts of revenge. I do not blame him.
Slay the guards, free our people, and watch out for the guard captain."
I prefer this solution.
"Good. I will follow you and help steer slaves toward the exit. If all goes as planned, we will all leave together.
One last thing—we must be careful to avoid drawing the eye of Slavemaster Arenim, You will never face a more ruthless mage."
All right. I'm ready.

After speaking with Eoki Sun-in-Shadow will appear through a portal. She begs Eoki not to leave but he refuses. Eoki asks Sun-in-Shadow to come with him to see the terrible conditions the slaves face in the mines, to which she agrees.

Eoki: "Sun-in-Shadow?"
Sun-in-Shadow: "Eoki. The way we left things was …. Please, don't go."
Eoki: "I must. You and I share a heart, but our souls chirr different songs. This cannot last."
Eoki: "But before you go, you must see how your Telvanni treat our kin. Please, come into the mine and see how they live. How they die"
Sun-in-Shadow: "Fine. I will do this for you, but then I must go."
Rihnissi: "Eoki, be careful. We'll keep an eye out for any movement from Tel Aruhn."

If you catch Eoki before he enters the mine, you can ask him about Sun-in-Shadow:

"I will follow you soon, friend. I just need to make sure that Sun-in-Shadow remains safe."
Why are you bringing Sun-in-Shadow into Vassamsi?
"She must see what her beloved House does to us. She fixes her eyes on the pages of her tomes, but remains blind to the suffering of her people. I care about her too much to let her remain so lost."
Do you really think you can change her mind?
"I must believe it. My heart is brilliant, but her brilliance gleams like a diamond—cold and hard edged. There is warmth in her, I know this. The Telvanni smothered it, but it can be rekindled.
Perhaps seeing her kin will make the difference."
Sun-in-Shadow and Eoki captured by Slavemaster Arenim

Enter the mine and either attack or use the smoke bomb to incapacitate the two guards in the main entrance. Free the slaves Kessa and Bakhati and continue forward. At this point Sun-in-Shadow becomes suspicious of Eoki's intentions.

Eoki: "Proceed with caution, egg-friend. The guard captain lurks nearby. I can feel it."
Sun-in-Shadow: "Eoki, what are you do—? Are those bodies?"
Eoki: "Come, see how your Telvanni masters treat their slaves."
Sun-in-Shadow: "What? Eoki, this is madness! You'll get me killed!"

A guard will spot you and run to fetch the Slavemaster while Captain Flaeus will attack.

Vassamsi Guard: "Intruders! I'll fetch the slavemaster!"

Defeat the captain and continue through the door to the work area, fighting any guards that are in your way. At this point Sun-in-Shadow regrets coming along.

Vassamsi Overseer: "The slaves are revolting! To arms! Cut them down!"
Slave: "This is it! Run!"
Eoki: "Rally, my friends! Make your escape!"
Sun-in-Shadow: "I want to leave! Now!"

Soon you will find Sun-in-Shadow with Eoki in front of the door leading to Vassamsi Mine Escape Shaft. Sun-in-Shadow tells Eoki she wants to leave and Eoki will say she is coming with him. Sun-in-Shadow will use a spell to knock down Eoki and run into the next room claiming she is being kidnapped.

Eoki: "Do not be afraid. I will make sure you reach the boat safely."
Sun-in-Shadow: "Boat? I'm not getting on any boat!"
Eoki: "Heart, you are coming with us. In time you will thank me."
Sun-in-Shadow: "How dare you!"
Sun-in-Shadow: "Help! I'm being kidnapped!"
Eoki: "I'm trying to save you!"

Eoki will then run after her. Upon entering you will find Sun-in-shadow and Eoki bound by magical chains, conjured by Slavemaster Arenim.

Slavemaster Arenim: "Ah, the leaders of this pathetic revolt. You will pay dearly!"
Sun-in-Shadow: "Wait, you fool! I'm a Telvanni mage! They were kidnapping me!"

After defeating the slavemaster, Sun-in-Shadow will be able to use her magic to free herself, but Eoki will still be chained. Speak with Sun-in-Shadows. She is not sure whether she should stop Eoki from escaping or allow him to leave. She will ask you what you think, and you can counsel her that if she loves him she should let him be free, or that she should hold on to him.

"I … I can't believe what just happened. That filthy Elf was going to kill me! A Telvanni mage!
And Eoki sought to drag me off like a prisoner! How could he do such a thing? Has he lost his mind?"
You can ask him yourself if you unbind him.
"I will. Of course I will. I just need a moment to think.
I could let him go. Perhaps I should. But why? He brings me joy and comfort, doesn't he? When he's not kidnapping me, that is. Why would I give that up if I didn't have to?
I doubt he'd be happy about it. Do you think he'll forgive you if you keep him a slave?
"Maybe. But if I let him go, I'll never see him again. The one person who truly cares about me, gone. No more silly Hist poems. No more wildflower bouquets. Nothing.
He'll forgive me. It will just take time, right? Please, help me decide."
He wants to go home. If you love him, you should set him free.
If you love him that much, you should hold on and never let go.

The End[edit]

Free Eoki[edit]

If you counsel Sun-in-Shadow to free Eoki, Sun-in-Shadow will dispel the binding spell on Eoki and allow him to leave. Eoki will warn her that the Telvanni will eventually betray her before running through the exit door. Sun-in-Shadow tells you she needs a moment to herself and tells you to run ahead.

Sun-in-Shadow: "Eoki, you can leave if you want. I won't stop you."
Eoki: "The House will betray you, Sun-in-Shadow. On that day, I hope you think of what we could have had."
Sun-in-Shadow: "I need a moment. We can talk outside."

Exit the mine through the door on the right. Eoki is mounrning for dead companions.

Eoki: "May your soul return to the Hist, my friend …."
Rihnissi "We can mourn later, Eoki. We have to go!"
Eoki: "Go. I will follow in a moment."

Speak with Eoki. He will explain that the few slaves who survive will link up with the Ropefish who will help them escape Vvardenfell. He thanks you for helping him.

"We escaped, but not without loss.
This place … it does nothing but break things. It nearly broke me."
Where will you go?
"Bothamul and his Ropefish will ferry us to the coast, then load us into a fishing boat. With luck, we will reach the mainland, then take the long road back to Black Marsh. To home. I thank you for all you've done, but I fear I will never be the same."
How so?
"The scars may fade. The pain in my limbs may melt away. My soul though … my soul feels like it is drowning.
I thought myself better than the Dark Elves. Purer. But in the end, I tried to take what I wanted by force, just like they do."
This place seems to take a toll on everyone.
"It does. Perhaps, with time, we may all learn to forgive ourselves.
Farewell, my friend. I hope we meet again some day."

Speak with Sun-in-Shadow to finish the quest.

"I feel as if my heart is breaking. How could I let him leave me?"
I think you did the right thing, Sun-in-Shadow.
"I suppose I did, but it brings me no joy. Little wonder that other members of my House do the wrong thing so often.
Thank you for all you've done, sera. I will never forget your loyalty and friendship."

You can speak to her after the quest.

What's next, Sun-in-Shadow?
"I'll need to keep my lies straight. I see a long, grueling audience with the Council ahead of me."
So what happens now?
"I try to pick up the pieces of my broken heart and continue my studies.
Letting Eoki go was agony, but you were right—this is better for both of us. I spent so much time trying to earn his affection and prove my loyalty …. Now I can truly focus."
Focus on what?
"The game. My role in the House. My arcane explorations. My future as a magister. All of it.
Perhaps, when I've reached my full potential, I'll seek out Eoki again. See the world, you know? Until then, I live the life of a Telvanni."

Keep Eoki Enslaved[edit]

If you counsel Sun-in-Shadow to keep Eoki enslaved, she will leave him in his bindings and ask you to speak with her outside the mine.

Sun-in-Shadow: "Yes … you're right. I can't let him go. I'll tell the others he's injured. That will please him, at least."
Eoki: "Sun-in-Shadow, what are you doing?"

You can speak to Eoki here.

"What has she done? She … she tightened the slavemaster's bindings!"
She wants to keep you here to work things out.
"What? She would keep me in chains to earn my affection?
She was right all along. She has a Dark Elf's heart—just as cruel and possessive as House Telvanni."
You did try to hold her against her will too.
"Yes, but that was different. I only wanted what was best for her. For both of us ….
Hist's tears, you are right. This place … do you see how it twists us? How it dries out our hearts and turns all to selfishness? Forgive me, friend. Forgive me."

Exit the mine through the door on the right. Sun-in-Shadow will tell Eoki's friend Rihnissi that Eoki was injured in the fight, and that he is not able to travel. Sun-in-Shadow tells her that Eoki wants her to leave without him.

Sun-in-Shadow: "Arenim wounded Eoki. I stabilized him, but he can't travel. He said you should leave without him."
Rihnissi: "Damn. We'll wait at the coast for as long as we can. Wish him good luck … and thank you."
Sun-in-Shadow: "I will tell him. Now go"

After Rihnissi leaves, speak with Sun-in-Shadow to finish the quest.

"I hope Eoki's friends make it to the coast. If the House captures them, the punishment will be severe.
Now, to settle this business with Eoki."
Are you sure this is what you want?
"Yes. Eoki may curse me, but he'll see the wisdom in this eventually. I'll sweep his role in the escape under the rug—keep him safe from reprisals. One day, he'll thank me.
I appreciate your help in all of this, sera. You're a true friend."

You can speak to her after the quest.

"Now, to get my lies straight. With the guards and Slavemaster Arenim slain, I'm sure I can come out ahead."
Any second thoughts?
"About keeping Eoki here? No. I struggled with the idea of him hating me for this, but in the end, I'm sure he'll see it was for the best.
He'll have the very best of things, and my love to fortify him."
Will you ever set him free?
"Yes, once the time is right—once he understands what he'd been giving up if he ran again. He belongs here. He'll see that eventually.
With his support I'll bend this House to our desires. There's no telling what we can achieve together!"

Notes[edit]

  • While speaking to Eoki at the docks, your characters will ask him who the Ropefish are, even if you have already met and helped them before at Khartag Point.
  • The name of the gold Eoki gives you to pay the Ropefish appears wrongly in two ways in the quest items. It appears as "Gold for the Khartog Mercenaries", using a generic name instead of the Ropefish while also misspelling Khartag's name.
  • The hint's description in the Journal while searching for hint for the true location of the Ropefish camp misspells Bothamul's name as "Bothumel".
    • The next hint's description while searching for the real camp misspells Bothamul's name again, this time as "Bothumul"
  • Captain Flaeus won't exist in the Vassamsi Mine entrance until reaching the related objective.
    • While the description of the objective to defeat him in the Journal states that you have to slay him, if you have acquired the knockout powder, it can be used against him.
  • The knockout powder can only be used in the first room, as upon entering the work area, all the guards are on alert and rush towards you.
