Welcome[edit]

Hello Justeazy! Welcome to the wiki. I hope you enjoy using the site and find the information on it useful. If you decide you want to help improve any of our pages, we're always welcoming to new editors so feel free. You might want to look at our Getting Started page for some tips on how to begin, then play in our Sandbox for a while to practice. If you need any help or advice, please ask me or one of our mentors. Enjoy! --SerCenKing Talk 11:01, 26 May 2009 (EDT)

Redirects[edit]

Hey. Thanks firstly for the edits you've been making to the Tamriel Rebuilt namespace. It's always nice to see activity there.

You'd made an amend to the NPC table on the Tel Mothrivra page which you'd noted had unexpected results. That's because the NPC tables draw their data from NPC pages, meaning that in the case of a name change, the NPC page needs to be updated too. This caught me out for ages, because a lot of NPC pages are set up to automatically redirect your browser to a destination, and so it's not obvious that those original NPC pages exist.

You can get UESP to load the text of a redirect page by adding &redirect=no to the end of the URL. For example:

https://en.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Tamriel_Rebuilt:Ivolde&redirect=no

(As to why redirect pages are used, it's because Morrowind and TR both have a ton of NPCs that just aren't relevant, either to quests, or as service providers. So a full page for such individuals is unnecessary.) - Jinks (talk) 10:21, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Jinks, and thanks for the information! I see you got both Involde and Chulasa that I was struggling with, so thank you for that! I'm thinking names were slightly changed for whatever reason between TR releases, because all the other information matches what I found in game.
So, if I'm understanding correctly, since the page name and the NPC name is the same, if I wanted to change the character's name in a table from (for this particular example) Inwold to Involde, I would first need to go to https://en.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Tamriel_Rebuilt:Inwold&redirect=no, move it to Involde (or delete the first one and create the second one), and then I could change the data in the table? Or would it be simply if I change the character name on the page and nothing else the rest will follow suit automatically?
It does make sense why it is done this way, but figuring it out for myself and understanding after it is explained to me are two different things, so thank you for that.
As far as other edits, it does look like if I select "edit" on that page I can change race/gender/etc. as necessary, and that will auto-populate into tables wherever relevant? Am i understanding that correctly?
As a final question, all of my recent edits are at least obliquely related to slaves because I'm currently working on Tamriel Rebuilt:Slaves as a page to match Morrowind:Slaves. I don't know why I took on such a big project for myself when I barely understand the markdown, but here we are. You can see my current progress if you want in my sandbox. Am I going to break anything if I tried to publish this page if any of the names conflict with the official pages, or is it not an issue because the table I'm building is from scratch and isn't using reference code in the same way?
Thank you for all your help and everything you've done in the wiki! I'm just trying to do my part [insert Starship Troopers meme here] to this wiki that has helped me so much over the years. Justeazy (talk) 02:54, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Renames
TR changes names on new releases occasionally - Inwold shared a name with an existing vanilla NPC, which isn't supposed to happen. Updates like those are hard to catch unless listed in Tamriel Rebuilt's publicised changelogs, so I'm glad you're getting them.
Inwold > Ivolde
In the case of another non-relevant NPC rename like Inwold > Ivolde:
  1. Move the Inwold NPC page using 'Move' to a new page named Ivolde.
  2. Edit the new Ivolde page to make sure the redirect link on it (if any) points to Ivolde, not Inwold.
  3. Update the NPCData table (if any) referencing Inwold, so that it references the new name instead.
  4. Go back to the original Inwold page, and check 'What Links Here'. It's at the top of the tools section on the left hand side of the page, and will let you see which pages are still linking to the original page. Ideally you'd then update the links on those pages.
  5. Still on the original Inwold page, remove or update the redirect (as it'll be redirecting to your new redirect page, making a double redirect - the UESP patrolers tend not to like these).
  6. Insert a {{prod|insertreasonfordeletionhere}} on the original to notify the admins that the page is no longer needed. This is more for tidiness than anything else.
Editing NPC pages
The tables that use {{NPCData|insertnpcsname}} populate automatically from the NPC pages, so yes, any edits to those NPC pages will pull through. There can be a couple of hours delay.
Tamriel Rebuilt:Slaves
The page itself looks good and I can't think of anything it'd break. I'd be inclined to move the related quest section to below the Slaves in Tamriel Rebuilt section, or remove it entirely - that list will get very long as TR gets into Dres/Hlaalu plantation areas, and will crowd out your other content. Players do ask about the location of various keys in the project's Discord from time to time, so that's information that I feel should be near the top in any case. But it's your call. Beware that slavery is obviously a touchy topic - TR frequently revises its own content on it (some books on slavery currently in the mod are scheduled to be rewritten), so if you add to your existing lore description, it'll be more futureproof to cite base game Morrowind sources rather than Tamriel Rebuilt ones.
I'm assuming that you've a page in mind which will link to the slaves page once published - you may wish to think about that if you haven't! - Jinks (talk) 10:50, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the answers and the advice. Given that there are still a LOT of things to learn I am not sure how big the page will get. For example I thought I had all the quests related to slavery pulled already a couple weeks ago, but I've found a good number more still. Perhaps I will split it into smaller pages with the main "Slaves" page being a place to store the quests list and lore info, and smaller pages based on region with a statement like "because the number of slaves in Tamriel Rebuilt is so high, they have been split into their respective regions in order to make the information more accessible and easier to sort through: [[link to slaves in Deshaan District]], [[link to slaves in Mournhold District]], etc.".
Not entirely sure. Just thinking of options down the road. Still have a long way to go. Thanks again for all your help! Justeazy (talk) 18:54, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
