[This is the logbook of the Bufflehead, a patrol ship of the Imperial Coastguard. Most entries are brief and uninteresting, but one report from few weeks ago stands out. It reads:]

MORNDAS, two hours after sundown; north of Teyn. Run-in with a catboat cast adrift, lanterns darkened. Vessel identified as belonging to Verenduin, a known smuggler. No souls onboard. Anchor missing; otherwise in good condition. No cargo apart from one empty crate labeled "good mazte" in smuggler's code. Reason for abandonment unclear. No other things of note.
