Journal Issues[edit]
I just finished this quest. I did not pick up the journals in the order shown. The steps to retrieve them were not marked as complete (I even tried dropping them and picking them back up.) However, I still got the step to reactivate the defenses and the quest completed normally. Bootstomp 05:50, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
- The order in which you pick up the journals is inconsequential, likely because the bodies are scattered about in a very large area, all of which is initially accessible (at least indirectly). Making you pick them up in a particular order would really confuse the process. I think this was a deliberate and reasonable design aspect to this quest. Eganio 23:40, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

- You mis-understand the problem. Not notifying players of a completed objective simply leads to more confusion - why give the player a check list if you are not going to use it. I thought the quest might be bugged, and I wanted to minimise the amount of backtracking I had to do to complete the quest. As it turns out it doesn't matter, and I would assume an oversight on the part of the developers. Krag's body is an obvious focus, which invites the player to do things out of order, (an order set by the game I would point out). It's not that one is able to pick up the journals in any order, that's sensible, it is that Krag's isn't registered which leads to confusion. Even dropping the journal from the inventory will have the quest marker still over the book - pretty obviously a bug. — Unsigned comment by 124.148.234.45 (talk) at 17:19 on 22 August 2012
(←) There are a couple more dead bodies and journals lying around. Stromm being one in the quarters, upstairs, near a giant spider and a tree like the one in Whiterun. At least one more also not mentioned in the article, but forgot his name... The whole place is too chaotic, one can easily miss stuff. 92.118.183.145 21:38, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Remember that other name too. "Stabin" or something. 92.118.183.145 21:40, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

- I ran into peculiar bugs in the residence area where items, bodies, my follower (Jordis), and myself (in over-the-shoulder view) would disappear. Has anyone else encountered these? I was afraid it was a side-effect of the SKSE, but disabling that and going to an older save did not eliminate those issues. I also got duplicates of some of the journals. 76.25.194.108 01:20, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I started this quest awhile ago and got really stumped after only finding Stromm's journal. I just arrived back and looked through a bunch of walkthroughs and realized I was stuck because Staub and Erj's bodies are no where to be found. I found the two soldiers and that falmar in the Armory. Does anyone have any clue what I should do now? Or if it's a lost cause?
Leveled amount of gold[edit]
I've got 1500 gold for completing this, level 53. Suggest changing quest reward to 'leveled amount of gold'. — Unsigned comment by 176.214.139.58 (talk) at 07:22 on 8 January 2012
- I've got 750 gold at level near 16. — Unsigned comment by 83.40.52.53 (talk) at 22:47 on 18 January 2012
- I've got 1250 gold at level 32. --FelixH 11:31, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Duplication[edit]
When I activated the journals, they would open up normaly, but I also got a debug message that it had been added to my inventory, before I chose to take it. After I took it, I found that I had two similar journals in my inventory. Also if I activated the body before the journal, the journal would open up on top of the body's inventory, even though I had not touched it, and the same duplication occured. This happened with all the body's inside Nchuand-Zel (not the imperial at the entrance). Jyggorath 17:22, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
- The same thing happened to me. (Eddie The Head 17:26, 12 January 2012 (UTC))

- Me too, but it definitely didn't the first time I did the quest. I'm wondering if one of the patches has perhaps made an effort to fix this quest (i.e - fix the bug where if you forgot to take one of the journals you may not be able to get it later to complete the quest), and this is some kind of side-effect? It struck me as odd that the journals seem to be scripted to open up automatically, and now when this happens it also seems to give you a copy automatically. Really they should have adjusted it simply so that the quest marker will continue to point at a book until you've actually taken it, rather than simply read it. Oh well! It definitely appears to be a new bug though, and definitely tied to the weird auto-journal scripting the quest uses. -- Haravikk 22:26, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

- I experienced this as well. It seems that dropping a journal and then picking it up again also duplicates it, even after the quest is completed. Not exactly gamebreaking, but I think it's still worth mentioning in the "bugs" section. -- 98.165.113.110 22:29, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

It's good to be the King???[edit]
I don't think I noticed this on any of my previous games, but I just did this quest and finished it. After I handed him the journals, Calcelmo said, "I'll inform the King." Wait, not the Jarl? But the KING? Whoa... (Okay, maybe a little humor there, but other than Ulfric trying to be High King, that's the first time I've heard any of the NPC's refer to their Jarl as King.) Agmen (talk) 02:59, 5 February 2013 (GMT)
- I've just done this quest with the dialog subtitles on. He doesn't say "king", but "kin". --93.219.7.14 19:16, 17 February 2013 (GMT)
Book Names Error?[edit]
Under stage 20 we have:
(Objective is assigned): Recover Erj's journal (Objective is assigned): Recover Krag's journal (Objective is assigned): Recover Staubs' journal
but the names of these books in the game are:
Erj's Notes, Krag's Journal, and Staubin's Diary.
So, does the game have the objectives, which show up in the player's [J]ournal, wrongly worded? Or, have we used the wrong wording here in the article? Or, is the use of the lower case "journal" meant to encompass any set of notes kept on a more or less recurring basis without regard to their title (which leaves only: Staubs vs Staubin)? Kalevala (talk) 21:40, 9 May 2013 (GMT)
- The table is correct in what is displayed. The lower case j indicates to me a broad meaning, rather than a specific item (backed up by some other generic coding names here, plus Stromm's journal/Storm's Diary). Staubs is shown ingame, but Staubin's is what is required, so a sic tag may apply there. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:34, 29 May 2013 (GMT)
Completed but stuck on Stage 255[edit]
I completed this quest quite a while ago on my current playthrough. I've since completed all the main quests for vanilla, and all DLC's, all guild quests and as many of the side quests that I've been able to find. It did clear from the journal, and I verified it's listed with all the other completed quests, but I might have experienced one of the bugs at that time. Now, I loaded a quest mod called Much Ado about Snow Elves. It loaded but it won't start till this quest is considered completed, and it doesn't recognize the quest is completed due to the Stage 255. I tried setting the stage back to 110, but it won't reset. I don't think you can set a quest back to an earlier stage, can you. Anybody have any thoughts or am I screwed for this mod for the current playthrough?
Thanks

- You could try the console command
completequest 000c3709
or, if that doesn't work,resetquest 000c3709
and then redo the quest. If this also fails, you could try to manually start the mod quest in question by usingstartquest
. Other than that, I have no idea. -- SarthesArai Talk 16:20, 15 April 2015 (GMT)
Unlimited Follower Carry Weight[edit]
PS4. During this quest, I gave my follower every single piece of loot and Dwarven metal I picked up. Well over 1500 weight-units it turned out, would have picked up more of the heavier and less valuable Falmer armor earlier in the quest if I had noticed sooner. The effect wears off immediately after leaving the ruin, so you may need to travel to a place of storage before unloading the follower. The effect only occurs during the quest.104.247.247.102 00:32, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
- Correction: I went back to Nchuand-Zel and the unlimited follower weight effect happened again, so it's not just during the quest. This is a handy place to get (plain) Falmer helmets, as a few are available very soon after entering, plus a bit of Dwarven metal.104.247.247.102 22:04, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
