The juvenile mudcrab

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Read Bounty: Juvenile Mudcrab.
  2. Speak to Viriya about taking over the bounty.
  3. Obtain a juvenile mudcrab for Viriya.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Mudcrab pool
The previous hire

This quest will begin while you are doing Angler Acquaintances, with you talking to Viriya:

"The waiting... the insufferable waiting."
What's wrong?
"Here. I want you to have this. Don't ask. Just take it."

She will then hand you a bounty for a juvenile mudcrab that she wants to study. The bounty points you in the direction of west of Broken Fang Cave. After reading the bounty, speak to Viriya:

I see. You hired someone to catch a juvenile mudcrab, but they never returned.
"It would seem so."
I wouldn't mind taking over the bounty.
"Thanks. Good luck out there."

You can either catch a juvenile mudcrab from a fishing spot with a normal rod, or you can head to the southeast of Gjukar's Monument, where there is a shallow pool. Above the pool underneath a rocky outcropping is a dead adventurer who has a fishing rod and a copy of the bounty. The pool itself contains the remains of a colossal mudcrab, a handful of hostile mudcrabs, and a juvenile mudcrab. Either defeat or ignore the hostile mudcrabs, then find and take the juvenile mudcrab within the crook of the giant mudcrab's outstretched arm.

Once you obtain the juvenile mudcrab, head back to Riften to hand it over to Viriya:

I managed to find a juvenile mudcrab for you to study. Here you go.
"Thanks. Couldn't have done that without you. I'm grateful for your efforts. Here, take this."

Viriya will reward you with 100 gold and a key to the Riften Fishery so that you can enter at any time. The juvenile mudcrab that you give her will be found as a mudcrab called Snippy after this quest.

Quest Stages[edit]

Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 I met Viriya, one of the employees at the Riften Fishery. She handed me a bounty letter and seemed rather frustrated. I should see what it has to say.
Objective 1000: Read Bounty: Juvenile Mudcrab
15 Viriya at the Riften Fishery has been conducting research on breeding mudcrabs to harvest their meat, much like fish. She has issued a bounty for someone to obtain a juvenile mudcrab for her studies, but the last person to accept the bounty never returned. I should speak to her when I am ready to take over the bounty.
Objective 1001: Speak to Viriya about taking over the bounty
20 Viriya at the Riften Fishery has been conducting research on mudcrabs in the hopes that they could be more easily bred and harvested, much like fish. She has issued a bounty for someone to obtain a juvenile mudcrab for her studies, but the last person to accept the bounty never returned. I should try fishing one up myself in the streams and lakes in the temperate parts of Skyrim. One lake in particular is known to be teeming with mudcrab, which Viriya mentioned was west of Broken Fang Cave.
Objective 0: Obtain a juvenile mudcrab for Viriya
Objective 20: Speak to Viriya
200 Finishes quest☑ I turned a juvenile mudcrab over to Viriya for her research. In return, she gave me a key to the Riften Fishery so that I may enter whenever I need to.

Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage ccBGSSSE001_Crab_MQ1 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest ccBGSSSE001_Crab_MQ1.
