- Either:
- Go to the Sacellum of Boethiah to find a copy of Eranya's Journal
- Go to the College of Winterhold and read a copy of Eranya's Research Notes
- Find Sivdur's Amulet
- Find Magrathi's skull
- Travel to Sivdur's Respite and enter the warrior's tomb
- Locate Goldbrand
Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
There are two locations to start the quest: the Sacellum of Boethiah and the College of Winterhold.
At the Sacellum of Boethiah in the fenced-in fighting area, you will find the body of Eranya. Search her body to find a copy of Eranya's Journal. Reading the notes begins the quest.
Alternatively, you can go to the Arcanaeum at the College of Winterhold and find a copy of Eranya's Research Notes located on the floor to the right of Urag gro-Shub's desk among some other books. Reading the Research Notes also begins the quest.
Once you've read Eranya's Research Notes, you will be attacked by Boethiah Cultists. You will then need to find two artifacts to complete the quest: Sivdur's Amulet and Magrathi's Skull.
Whiterun - Sivdur's Amulet[edit]
Visit Whiterun and speak to Lars Battle-Born to obtain Sivdur's amulet:
- I heard your dad gave you a very old, special amulet. Is that true?
- "Ahh... yeah."
- I need it. Would you give it to me?
- "Go away."

Ivarstead - Magrathi's Skull[edit]
Travel to Ivarstead and enter Shroud Hearth Barrow to defeat Sivdur's betrayer, Magrathi, and take his skull. Magrathi is a maskless Dragon Priest who will appear in the Hall of Stories (the claw door chamber) once the quest has started. He will be just as powerful as any of the others (level 50) no matter your level, so be wary.
Sivdur's Respite[edit]
You will now need to head north to Sivdur's Respite. It's located a short distance to the southwest of Snow Veil Sanctum and to the southeast of Winterhold. Be careful when you enter the cave as there will be more of Boethiah's cultists to fight. Once they are defeated place Sivdur's amulet on the pedestal to the left of the door and Magrathi's skull on the pedestal to the right of the door in order to proceed. Before leaving the room look to the right of the pedestals for a knapsack and apothecary's satchel to loot. There are also some gold coins in a box on the floor by the bandit's bedroll. Don't forget to pick up the book called Eranya's Notes on Sivdur's Tomb found on the table next to the apothecary's satchel.
Head down the stairs to a small room with a set of double doors, two unopened sarcophagi, and some draugr in it. Once they are defeated ignore the double doors for now and pull the chain to open the portcullis on the left side of the room. Directly across from the hall there is a burial urn. Take the hall to the left and you'll find an alcove with an ancient Nord bow and some arrows, another alcove with some potions, gems, a soul gem, and alchemical ingredients and at the end of the hall you'll find an expert-locked chest; the hall to the right leads to another small room with some more draugr in it. You'll find an urn and a random Spell Tome. Go back up to the previous room and beware the firetrap as you go through the set of double doors. Head down a short flight of stairs and go until you reach a dead end. Pull the chain to open the portcullis on your right to enter a room with a draugr to defeat. You'll find a soul gem and potion and another urn to loot. Head back across the hall and descend a spiral stairway until you reach a set of iron doors. Don't forget to check the alcoves for a potion and burial urn to loot along the way. The iron doors lead to Sivdur's Tomb.
Enter the room and take the Goldbrand Katana from the table. Doing this will cause two of Sivdur's honor guards to attack you. Once they are defeated the sword is yours. Loot the boss level chest and urns in the room. There is no shortcut out of the cave so you will need to retrace your steps to leave. Be aware as you leave that when you reach the room with the two unopened sarcophagi they will open and you will need to fight a final two draugr in order to escape the tomb.
Notes[edit]
- Reading Eranya's Journal at Sivdur's Respite will initiate the miscellaneous journal entry to visit the College of Winterhold if you have not previously been told to visit the College before.
- If this quest is done concurrently with investigating Shroud Hearth Barrow, you will be dealing with a Dragon Priest in the first zone on top of the insane mage Wyndelius Gatharian before you can even reach the claw door and the Word of Power within.
Bugs[edit]
- It appears that the Boethiah Cultists will respawn in the Arcanaeum whenever the cell resets. From there, they stalk you wherever you go, and they can appear anywhere, including inside player homes. They only follow at walking speed, so having them catch up to you may be fairly infrequent and appear to be arbitrary.
- The Official Skyrim Special Edition Patch, version 1.6.629.0, fixes this bug.
- Entering Sivdur's Respite before starting the quest may set the quest to Stage 400 and prevent the quest from starting normally. ?
- This can be fixed by using the console command
resetquest ccBGSSSE005_MainQuest
to reset the quest.
