Pergan Asuul's second and third form

Pergan Asuul is the principal antagonist during the events of Shadowkey. Although Skelos Undriel is worried that Jagar Tharn will come to control the Umbra' Keth it is Asuul who comes closest, and who is willing to sacrifice himself to strengthen the shadow. You will first feel his presence in Earthtear Caverns past the invisible Shadow Gate. If you don't have a Shadowkey when you cross it, you will get the following message and his response

"Your shadow distorts and twists on the floor. You feel as if someone stabs your neck with an icicle. 'You have neither my permission, nor the key,' rasps a voice. 'You may not enter.' An unseen force blocks your way."

After collecting the Shadowkey however:

"Your way is blocked by an unseen force. A whispery voice says, 'You...,' then disappears in a shrill shriek. You may now enter the room."

If you retrieve Azra's Bandage behind the Shadow Gate:

"Interloper, neither key nor Azra's Handiwork are for you. What you take from him today, later I shall take from you thricefold."

Finally you are left with the message:

"The voice fades, leaving you alone in the cavern."

Pergan Asuul's first incarnation

Although the non-linear nature of the game means it isn't guaranteed, his first appearance in person is supposed to be in Twilight Temple, where he describes your shadow as "practically marinated in courage", a taste he acquired when you ventured into Earthtear Caverns. At this point, he will drop the Twilight Shadowkey when slain.

Quest-Related Events

When met for the first time he will talk to you:

"Have we met? Did I taste your shadow in Earthtear Caverns? No matter.
Your shadow is practically marinated in courage, a taste I acquired some time ago."

Taste this, monster.

Once killed 'Pergan melts and bubbles into a dark pool, hissing':

"Once is done, but thrice has been foretold.
But I have taken measure of your power, while you do not even suspect the measure of mine."

Pergan Asuul's second incarnation

His second incarnation is found in Lakvan's Stronghold, despite Jagar Tharn's advice to Lakvan to end his association with Asuul. It is this incarnation that will eventually prove Asuul's undoing, as his slip of the tongue reveals either the location or identity of Azra Nightwielder and restores Azra's memory.

If the meeting in Twilight Temple has been avoided, Asuul has just one word to say before beginning combat: "die". Otherwise he will ask if you found slaying him to your liking, and tell you that you should take comfort in the fact that you are doing his will if you try to kill him again.

In either case, his last words in this incarnation are "It is even better than I could have hoped for." before giving away the knowledge about Azra.

It should be clear at this point that Pergan Asuul hopes to strengthen the Umbra' Keth through your continued conflict with him. You will have to fight him one last time...

Quest-Related Events

(Pergan Asuul's face contorts into a hideous hybrid of a smile and rigor mortis.)

"So, you found slaying me to your liking?"

It sure beats being slain.

"^(?)

I see once was not enough

"No, no it wasn't. And should you find need to kill me again, take comfort in the fact that you are doing my will by doing so."

Comfort?

"Ah, you mingle with shadow without understanding. The forces you have set in motion, I shall harness, and none have the knowledge to stop me."

We shall see.

Killing you should be easy.

"But you have no real comparison, do you? Let me now remedy that."

(Pergan Asuul attacks with a shriek.)

Once killed:

(Pergan laughs as his form begins to lose shape.)

"It is even better than I could have hoped for.
Even mingling shadows with Azra Nightwielder will not help you now."

Pergan Asuul's third incarnation

His final incarnation stands at the top of the stairs leading to Crypt of Hearts III - the final stairs before the Umbra' Keth can be encountered. Trying to use the stairway reveals that Asuul has cursed them to prevent anybody descending; he must be killed before the final level can be accessed.

Quest-Related Events

"I am getting quite tired of seeing you, whelp."

This is the final time.

(Pergan smiles, the most natural smile his distorted face can manage.)

"Absolutely. But I admit to being a poor host the last times."

Your death is all I ask for./Enough talking!
