Trail of the Skin-Stealer

After speaking with Mudyn, you will find Ukatsei up the hill towards the Vicecanon's hiding-cave. He is shirtless and tied down to a slab. Free him.

"Quick, untie me before she returns!"

Before who returns?

"That crazy Elf! She tried to cut my chest, but I kicked her off the altar. Said she'd be back with a duller knife, so it would last longer.
Wait, I smell her. Cut me loose! Don't let her steal my face!"

I'll cut you loose.

He will run to the cave to seek shelter:

Ukatsei: "Thank you, friend! Quickly, meet me in that cave!"

Meet him in the vicecanon's cave. He will join you to find Vicecanon Hrondar:

"What madness. Soldiers died thinking our own ranks betrayed us. I'd like to feed those skin-stealers to a wamasu with the flux.
I saw Vicecanon Hrondar's guard lead him away before the attack. If his guard were skin-stealers, he's in grave danger."

How can we find Vicecanon Hrondar?

"I'm not just the best-looking scout in Shadowfen, I'm also the best tracker. I can pick up Vicecanon Hrondar's scent and lead us right to him.
I'll need someone to watch my back while I follow my nose. We should work in pairs with skin-stealers about, yes?"

Tell me more about the attack.

If you speak to him again:

"Stay alert. I don't want to end up on that slab again."

When he catches Hrondar's scent:

Ukatsei: "They brought him past the cave. Strange ... it is an old smell."

Ukatsei: "They dragged him up this rise, straight ahead. he didn't struggle."

Approaching the corpse of Vicecanon Hrondar:

Ukatsei: "Vicecanon ... oh, no. We're too late."

Ukatsei: "We'll find who did this."

After examining the corpse:

Ukatsei: "Did you find any sign of who did this to him?"

After examining the corpse, he will realize that Hrondar has been dead for awhile and has been impersonated by a skin-stealer. Ukatsei urges you to notify the other vicecanons immediately about this:

"Something's wrong. He smells ... very dead."

Vicecanon Hrondar wasn't killed recently.

"If the vicecanon was dead this whole time … was it a … a skin-stealer who … who launched the attack on the cave? Or before that, when we lost the other vicecanons?"

You can tell the skin-stealers by smell. Wouldn't you have noticed before?

"Vicecanon Hrondar always smelled of mead. I didn't ... I should have ....
Xuth! What secrets do the Dominion already know?"

We should tell the other vicecanons about this.

"You're right. They'll know what to do. They have to.
Despite his rough manner, Vicecanon Hrondar was a hero to many in Stormhold. When this is all over, he'll have a fitting burial."

If you exit the conversation before turning in the quest, he will alternatively say:

"Who knows how long Vicecanon Hrondar's imposter fooled us all."

You should tell the others that Vicecanon Hrondar is dead. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

The Skin-Stealer's Lair

Continuing your conversation from the previous quest, Ukatsei tells you you need to find a way into the skin-stealer's lair within the ruins.

"This imposter must be found before he can fool anyone else. But I think I know where he's hiding."

Where?

"Vicecanon Hrondar ordered us to stay away from a nearby hill. If it was his skin-stealer, he must've held us back for a reason.
I bet he's hiding below the hill's surface. The buried temple complex must have an entrance there."

What kind of entrance?

"A doorway, maybe stairs, or a portal of some kind? I'd join you, but I'm no use in tight quarters.
I'll inform the vicecanons of what happened, yes?"

I'll find Vicecanon Hrondar's imposter.

Speaking to him again after starting the quest:

"It's terrible, wondering if you should trust your superiors."
