I picked up the Fable of the Gryphon as my next step to restoring the Scholarium. I'll need to uncover its secrets to open the Gryphon door, meet the Luminary within, and amplify the power of the Scribing Altar.


Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Attempt to read the Fable of the Gryphon
  2. Talk to Votary Llaren, Votary Nahlia, and the Echo of Regret
  3. Read the annotated fable page recovered by Nahlia
  4. Go to Honrich Tower, dispel three wards, and collect the 1st Gryphon Key Fragment
  5. Talk to the Fox and read the next annotated fable page
  6. Go to Riften, dispel three wards, and collect the 2nd Gryphon Key Fragment
  7. Talk to the Fox and read the next annotated fable page
  8. Go to Broken Helm Hollow, dispel three wards, and collect the 3rd Gryphon Key Fragment
  9. Talk to the Fox and read the last annotated fable page
  10. Take the key to Shroud Hearth Barrow and reveal the door
  11. Go through the door to the Wing of the Gryphon and speak to the Fox
  12. Dispel Ulfsild's Ward of the Blizzard and speak to the Gryphon
  13. Place the fable on the dais.
  14. (Optional) Ask your Allies in the Scholarium for clues/suggestions on which challenges to do.
  15. Complete three of the Gryphon's safeguards and return to the Gryphon:
    • Safeguard of Health - gather Foxroot plants in the eastern Rift
    • Safeguard of the Depths - defeat a delve boss in the Rift
    • Safeguard of Corruption - pickpocket A Corrupt Merchant in city of Riften (just one is all that is needed)
    • Safeguard of Death - slay a lich in a dungeon and collect its Phylactery Shard
    • Safeguard of Thieves - complete two heists for the Thieves Guild
    • Safeguard of Stars - collect Shards of Aetherius in Belda, Lindai, and Sardavar Leed in Cyrodiil
  16. Steal Daedric Princes' creatia from Dawnbreak, Rootwater Grove, and Faldar's Tooth with help from the Fox
  17. Bring the creatia back to the Wing of the Gryphon and watch the ritual
  18. Collect the Sigil of the Gryphon
  19. Place the sigil on the Altar of Scribing
  20. Talk to Votary Nahlia

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • After returning the creatia to the Gryphon to collect his sigil, several animated defenders will be seen leaving the Wing of the Gryphon. From this point on, they can be seen standing guard in various locations around the Scholarium, but they serve no purpose beyond the aesthetic.
  • Safeguard of Corruption: in the Scholarium, take the portal to Riften. Go into the town to find a Corrupt Merchant walking around. Pickpocket him. If you get spotted just go to a guard and pay the fine.

Trivia[edit]

If you talk to The Fox after completing the challenges, he congratulates you and oddly, smells grapes on you. This is a reference to Aesop's Fables: The Fox and The Grapes (where we get the term "sour grapes")
