Quest-Related Events[edit]
After you assist Retainer Balver with creating a tincture for Oathman Llaro you may soon realize it is actually a poison. In either case, you bring it to Llaro who will be in conversation with Spellwright Varsva. If you happen to speak with her before Llaro:
- "I work with Oathman Llaro, not for him. If you have business with him, get to it."
When you speak with Oathman Llaro you have the option of informing him about Balver's assassination attempt or not.
In the case that you warn Oathman Llaro beforehand, he will have Spellwright Varsva summon Retainer Balver before them:
- Oathman Llaro: "Hah! Well, Spellwright. If you will, do the honors and bring the accused poisoner to us!"
- Spellwright Varsva: "I take no orders from you, Oathman. But my duty to House Telvanni demands I summon the offender to us."
- <Spellwright Varsva casts a spell and in a flash of red light, Retainer Balver is suspended in the air with chains.>
- Retainer Balver: "What? How? No. This is some sort of mistake!"
- Oathman Llaro: "Not even the courage to deliver the poison yourself! Balver Bemis, you are a cretin to the last breath!"
Speaking with her at this point:
- "You've been honest, and Balver will now pay for your honesty. It'll be up to Llaro here to see to that. None of my business what happens now, nor do I really care."
After speaking to Llaro, Varsva tells the oathman to not waste any time punishing Balver:
- Spellwright Varsva: "Cease this needless posturing, Llaro. Deal with this and be done with it."
- Oathman Llaro: "Right, right, I'll deal with it Spellwright. But allow me some time to savor the moment."
Talking to her after the quest is completed:
- "I've no real care for what happens next. Llaro needs to find a new retainer."
- So does this sort of thing happen often?
- "Often enough. Though assassination attempts are seldom this clumsy. So it goes.
Oathman Llaro will make Balver an example to others. Well done. Or, my condolences. I don't know. Honestly, I can't bring myself to care about any of this."
On the other hand, if you don't say anything about the tincture and hand it over, the following happens:
- <Oathman Llaro snatches the tincture from you and guzzles it down, immediately after he falls down dead. Spellwright Varsva kneels beside the body.>
- Spellwright Varsva: "Careless fool. Didn't even take a whiff before guzzling down a vial from a stranger. Well, I suppose his seat is empty now. I wonder who will claim it?"
- <Retainer Balver approaches quickly.>
- Retainer Balver: "It worked? It worked! Is he …? Oh, he is quite dead. Good! Ah ha! I did it! Ahem. I mean we did it! Thank you so much!"
Speaking with her before Balver:
- "The poisoning of an oathman is generally frowned upon … unless, of course, it is executed flawlessly. This was far from flawless."
After speak with Balver, the quest will be completed. Afterwards, Spellwright Varsva will speak to Balver:
- Spellwright Varsva: "Well, we need a replacement. By the power granted me by House Telvanni, I bestow upon you, Balver Bemis, the rank of Oathman. Now begone, before someone poisons you."
- Retainer Balver: "Oathman! Well, if you say so, Spellwright! I promise to bring pride and glory to House Telvanni!"
You can then talk to Spellwright Varsva some more and she will explain the some of the realities of House Telvanni and advancement:
- "It appears that Balver is more clever than he lets on. But know that with any slip-up Balver may suffer the same fate as his late master."
- Does this sort of thing happen often?
- "Poison? Of course. There are attempts to climb up the ranks all the time. Some fail. Some succeed. The price for failure is steep. Had Balver Bemis failed in his attempt, he wouldn't be so merry."
- Unknown Trigger
- "It is dangerous to meddle in the affairs of House Telvanni. Llaro's fate means little to me, but his position must be filled. That is our way."
