Track down Varnedo

Gorgath Deadeye is after a Redguard called Varnedo. Rumor has Varnedo in Ivarstead and Gorgath will give me a reward for tracking him down.

Detailed Walkthrough

Talking to Gorgath Deadeye in Riften reveals that he's in an ugly mood because he's on the lookout for Varnedo, a bounty target who's gotten away. The last he's heard is that the man is on the other side of the Rift, in Ivarstead.

"Unless I killed a friend of yours and yer here to get even, back off.
I'm lookin' for someone and it's not you. It's yer lucky day."

Who you looking for?

"Dirt-eater by the name of Varnedo. Heard he was here, but now I hear he's in Ivarstead.
Chasin' him is getting old. I've got other places to be."

What's it worth to you if I check out Ivarstead?

"Huh. Might be worth somethin'. If you find Varnedo, kill him. Make it painful. Then we'll see.
But if you cross me, I'll cut you in half."

Just have my money ready.

Go to the inn in Ivarstead, and talk to the innkeeper, Adla. She will tell you that a Redguard has been there, and seemed friendly enough. You can tell her that he's a wanted man, or that he's a friend of yours that you're trying to track down, and she will point you in the direction of another patron, Akvid Gray-Sky.

I'm looking for a Redguard named Varnedo.

"There was a Redguard here a bit ago. Friendly enough, but I didn't catch his name.
You're not looking to cause trouble are you? We like things peaceful in Ivarstead."

No trouble. Just an old friend I haven't seen in awhile.

"I don't know if he's your friend or not, but I saw him speak with Akvid Gray-Sky over there."

He's a wanted man. By me and others who aren't as pleasant.

"I'm not finding you very pleasant. The Redguard spoke with Akvid Gray-Sky for a while. He might be able to tell you more.
And don't run off Akvid. He's one of my regulars."

Akvid Gray-Sky is more cautious than the innkeeper. He can be bribed, or intimidated if you have the skill, into revealing where Varnedo is—he's set up camp north of town, just up the river from here.

"If you're going to hang around, pull up a chair and buy us a round."

I hear you were talking to a Redguard. Varnedo, maybe?

"Who, wait, who are you?
Leave me alone. I don't know any Varnado."

"Say, something seems to be coming back to me. Last I heard, he was setting up camp to the northeast, near the river.
Just don't say I told you, all right?"

[Intimidate] I think you do. Tell me where he is and only Varnado dies today.

"Whoa, no need to get violent! Look down by the river to the northeast. Varnado said he was going to set up camp there.
Just go away and leave me out of this."

In case you were wondering whether Varnedo might be the innocent party, and thinking there might be two sides to the story... there aren't. Varnedo won't give you a choice: he will attack you on sight, and has two bandit companions to make the fight interesting. Once you've killed Varnedo, report back to Gorgath to receive your reward.

"You back? Let me guess—you can't find Varnedo, either?"

Job's done, Gorgath. Varnedo is dead.

"Dead, eh? I hope he squealed like a pig. Nice work. Here's yer payoff.
But if I hear that Varnedo's still alive, I'll hunt you down and carve yer ears off!"
