Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Enthralling Mist[edit]

You can begin this quest by talking to Heluin outside Longhaven. He says people have been disappearing into the moors lately, and that you should speak to Breduin if you'd like to learn more, as Breduin knows more about this than Heluin does.

Head into Longhaven. Breduin is inside the pod hut just to the right as you enter town. Enter and speak with him. He tells you that the mist changed a sickly color a few weeks ago, and hunters who entered would drop their weapons and wander the moor unarmed. A dour-looking Dunmer traveler recently bought supplies in Longhaven before walking into the mist. He seemed like he knew what he was doing, so Breduin suggests you find him. This Dunmer can be found in Shademist Moors.

Ride or walk south of Longhaven to the Shademist Moors. Head southwest and you will find a small camp at the base of a ledge with a Dunmer named Mel Adrys sitting by the fire. He tells you that he's tracked a vampire to a lair within the moors, and that he's never seen magic quite like what's affecting the mist. However, he can feel that the vampires are responsible for it. He tells you that if you want to accompany him, you should meet him at the vampires' lair, east of his camp. He then teleports away to the lair.

Uncovering the Mystery[edit]

Head southeast of the camp, and up the hill along the winding path. You come across a cave entrance. Note that there is a body outside the cave which you can examine to begin the quest Deadly Ambition. Regardless of whether you pick up this additional quest, enter Shademist Enclave, the vampire lair. Go down the passageway from the entrance, and you'll find Mel Adrys next to a weakened vampire named Gadinas.

Talk to him. Mel says that this vampire is not the one he's hunting, but he's going to kill it anyway. You have the opportunity to question the beast. Gadinas tells you all about how his clan fed peacefully on hoarvors until someone from the Veiled Heritance promised his clan's leadership power. Faenir Blood-Letter was one of the staunchest supporters of accepting the offer. An ancient vampire's skull is responsible for the mist flooding Shademist Moors. If you destroy the skull, the magic dissipates along with it.

Now that this conversation is over, you can decide whether you want Mel to kill Gadinas or not.

Clearing the Lair[edit]

After the skull is destroyed, a storm of angry red mist swirls around the ritual site

You must now go through the cave and kill Faenir, as well as Athraedal and Lathriel, the other supporters of the veiled Altmer Gadinas mentioned. Mel Adrys will follow you and fight with you. Firstly, Athraedal can be found in the northwest corner of the first room. Fight and kill him. When he dies, you'll notice his spirit emerge from his body. Leave this chamber through the eastern passage. Follow the tunnel as it turns right into another room. Fight your way through, taking the western passage around and following it as it takes a sharp turn, going east.

Continue down the passage further until you reach a junction. Turn right and go into the large room this path leads you to. Fight through, crossing the bridge over the chasm and going to the small camp on the other side. You find Lathriel there, as well as two spiders. Fight and kill her; her spirit emerges from her body as well. Leave this room the way you came, and go back the junction; this time go east into a huge chamber. Head through to the northeast corner, where you'll find and kill Faenir, whose soul's departure you also witness.

Now that you have killed the three vampires, you can now go and destroy the Skull of Vargarion, therefore dispelling the mist and dispelling the magic that was enthralling Longhaven's people. Leave through the western passage out of this large room, and follow the passageway as it winds up and over the previous rooms, into a final room in which the ritual is happening. You see the skull in the middle with three the spirits of the vampires' now dead leaders surrounding it. Walk up to the skull and interact with it to destroy it. Once it is destroyed, head north and leave the lair.

Return to Longhaven[edit]

Now that the mist is gone, you should return to Longhaven and inform Breduin of the good news. He rewards you with some leveled gold and the Longhaven Brigandine.

Notes[edit]

  • Mel Adrys won't exist in the moors before starting the quest.
  • The vampire leaders won't exist inside the cave before starting the quest or reaching the related objective.
  • Despite saying he will help you by striking from the shadows before disappearing, once Mel Adrys reappears when initiating battle the first time, he will not go invisible again afterward.
  • Mel Adrys will cry out a battle line every time he initiates combat, being quite more vocal than most quest followers.
  • Mel Adrys will be moved straight to Longhaven from being your follower after exiting the enclave once the skull is destroyed.
  • Despite the Shademist Moors area objective completion message stating the clan is destroyed, they will continue to appear in the enclave after the quest is completed and location is cleared.
