Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

After you've been adventuring with Ember for some time, and if you've been working on maintaining a healthy rapport with her, she will feel comfortable enough to ask you for help in finding Jhaka, one of her childhood friends. You'll start by heading to Skywatch, where you'll find Brisha. He has received word of a pit fighter in Vvardenfell who meets Jhaka's description. Ember is shocked that such a gentle person as Jhaka could be involved in such activity, even if he is a giant, and she is suspicious that perhaps he was abducted and sold into slavery. Speaking with her more reveals she has some strong opinions about Dunmer, especially if your character is not a Dark Elf:

"Can you blame me? There's no reason besides tracking down Jhaka that I would willingly enter that land of hateful enslaving Dark Elves.
If I could, I'd send that meteor that floats in their sky into the Telvanni lands."
If it really is Jhaka, do you think the Telvanni are going to give us trouble if we try to free him?
"Ha! I'd like to see them try. I'll be on my best behavior because I want to find Jhaka, but if a Telvanni so much as touches me, I can't be held accountable for what I do.
A lightning bolt through the skull might do some of them good anyway."
You don't have a high opinion of Dark Elves, do you?
Not all of them. I just get mad thinking about the ones who kept Khajiit and Argonian slaves. I know not all Dark Elves are like that so I shouldn't be so distrustful … but the Telvanni definitely are. Arrogant bastards.

Head to Sadrith Mora to continue the investigation. It is found in the archipelago on the eastern shores of Vvardenfell, part of the Azura's Coast region. At the Gateway Inn, you'll speak with the proprietor, Osithos Morelo. He confirms Ember's fears: Jhaka has indeed been sold into slavery. But the proprietor has already sold him to someone else. He'll only agree to tell you more if you'll agree to "acquire" a bracelet from Varvisi Uleni, a merchant who peddles her wares outside the Tel Naga market here in Sadrith Mora. Approaching the vendor, Ember will relay her plan:

"You might not love this, but trust me, it'll be fun! I used to do this trick with Song and Silverslip whenever we needed some extra coin.
I'm going to turn you into a monkey. Then, you run up to Varvisi and distract her so I can pinch the bracelet."
You're going to what?
"Hilarious, right? You'll be just enough of a distraction. Just rifle though her stuff. All eyes will be on you and no one will notice me slipping a hand into her pocket. It's perfect!
But the spell won't last forever, so we have to do this quick!"

That's right: like it or not, you're about to polymorph into a monkey and facilitate larceny. Once she transforms you, head over to the merchant and rifle through her jewelry pack, allowing Ember to lighten Varvisi's pockets. With the bracelet in hand, it's time to get back to Osithos for that information he promised. True to his word, he points you in the right direction. After wiping away the greasy feeling he left you after talking with him, head to Pulk.

If you travel a west-by-northwesterly path, aiming for Falensarano Ruins, you'll pass by the village of Tel Aruhn (the entrance is a door in the cliffs, near the docks on the southwestern side of the island) and the Daedric ruin of Yansirramus (part of an achievement and the location of the Stone of Yansirramus). This vector will also lead you through a pass in the ridgeline on the eastern shores of Vvardenfell, and right past Ieneth Ancestral Tomb (if you are completing the achievement).

Outside the entrance of Pulk, Ember will want to chat. Hearing the guilt weighing on her, you can continue the conversation:

Are you all right?
"I'll be better once we find Jhaka. It's just … if I'd gotten back a little faster that day, maybe I could have stopped him and the others from being taken. He's suffered this whole time because I wasn't quick enough. Because I wasn't there."
None of this was your fault, Ember.
"Thanks for saying that. I don't know if I believe you, but it's nice to hear, anyway.
I'm not helping Jhaka, or any of them, by sitting here whining. It's just something that's been weighing on me, y'know? So thanks for listening. Let's go."
Ember's friend Jhaka, free from his cage.

Pulk is a delve and a bandit den. Just inside the entrance you'll find a note corroborating earlier reports of Jhaka's illness. The fastest way to reach him (and the skyshard, and the delve boss) is to move straight ahead, keeping to the left at the first intersection, and jumping the rail to drop down to the lower level. The skyshard is in a crate at that spot, and Jhaka and the delve boss are through some twists and bends heading east. After rescuing him from a cage (and dispatching the delve boss if you wish), exit the delve and talk with him:

Do you remember what happened the day you were taken?
It was all very sudden. It was a group of mercenaries though not any faction this one was familiar with. They descended quickly and incapacitated me. Then, they went for Silverslip and Song.
There was one strange thing ....
What was strange?
It was Silverslip's expression. She looked scared as they took her and Song away. you must understand, Silverslip was never scared. Even when truly afraid, it manifested as anger. It was odd, as if she knew something in that moment we did not.
Can you remember anything else: Ember wants to track down Song and Silverslip too.
This one remembers very clearly an insignia on the mercenaries' armor. It is burned into my mind, but all these years, I have not been free to investigate it.
Now that I am safe, I will focus on getting well and hunt down that symbol.

The stage is set for the next quest in Ember's story, which will come at a later time. Speak with her to complete the quest.

Quest Stages[edit]

Cold Trail
Finishes Quest Journal Entry
Ember and I need to go to Skywatch to meet up with an old contact of hers, a baker named Brisha. He might have information about one of Ember's vanished friends.
Objective: Find Brisha In Skywatch
I found Brisha beside a merchant cart in Skywatch. Ember wants to keep watch, so I should speak with Brisha myself.
Objective: Talk to Brisha
I should talk to Ember about the information Brisha provided.
Objective: Talk to Ember
Brisha said he heard about a Pahmar said to be working at the Gateway Inn in Sadrith Mora. Ember and I need to head there to track down this lead.
Objective: Go to Sadrith Mora's Gateway Inn
I don't see a Pahmar in the immediate area. I should ask around the inn about the tip.
Objective: Ask About Jhaka at the Gateway Inn
We need to find the jeweler, Varvisi Uleni, and get a bracelet from her if we are to get any information from the owner of the Gateway Inn.
Objective: Go to Tel Naga
It seems like Ember has a plan to get the bracelet the inn owner wants. I should talk to her.
Objective: Talk to Ember
Ember wants to turn me into a monkey so I can distract the jeweler. While I do that, Ember will steal the bracelet from her. I need to do this quickly before the spell wears off.
Objective: Distract Varvisi Uleni
Ember got the bracelet from the jeweler. I should talk to her.
Objective: Talk to Ember
We got the bracelet, we should return it to Osithos at the inn.
Objective: Talk to Osithos Morelo
Osithos kept his word, such as it is. He sold Jhaka to bandits, who last he heard, were headed to Pulk. Ember and I need to go there to investigate.
Objective: Go to Pulk
I should talk to Ember about the situation before we head into Pulk.
Objective: Talk to Ember
We need to explore Pulk and locate Jhaka. One big Pahmar among bandits should't be hard to find.
Objective: Find Jhaka
We found Jhaka, but he's locked in a cage. I should free him before we speak further.
Objective: Free Jhaka
Jhaka is obviously weak and ill. I should talk to him to make sure he is well enough to make it out of this place.
Objective: Talk to Jhaka
Jhaka is determined to be free of the bandits and Pulk and will stick with us as we escort him to safety.
Objective: Escort Jhaka to Safety
Now that we're outside of Pulk, I should speak with Jhaka while Ember heals him.
Objective: Talk to Jhaka
Finishes quest☑ We got Jhaka out of Pulk, though clearly his health has suffered. Ember is optimistic that he will recover fully in time. Learning more about the mercenaries Jhaka described may lead to finding the others as well.
Objective: Talk to Ember

  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
