Quest-Related Events[edit]

After speaking with Aquilia Verres outside the estate, you will be asked to assist Mizzik Thunderboots with his investigation into recent events in thue wake of Lady Weatherleah's death. While you search for Betu who has run off with the copy of the will, you will overhear a discussion between Groundskeeper Otho Florius and Chef Edric Brussiner. If you remain hidden out of sight, they have more to say:

Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "Get it together, Edric. You're a mess."
Mizzik Thunderboots: "What's that? Mizzik hears voices. Let us listen in."
Chef Edric Brussiner: "Our dear lady is dead and you still don't believe me."
Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "Then talk to the investigator. Don't pull me into this."
Chef Edric Brussiner: "Can we even trust him? I don't want to be labeled a suspect."
Groundskeeper Otho Florius: "Better to talk to an investigator than a gardener, Edric."
Chef Edric Brussiner: "Not a gardener, a friend. You'd do well to leave, Otho. And take Betu with you."
<Edric sits down on the stone garden wall.>

If you try talking to Edric here, he will give his opinion:

"You are working with the investigator, I see. Don't believe a word that family says. Vultures, all of them!"

Later on, you will find Betu with a scroll in his mouth and Chef Edric nearby:

Mizzik Thunderboots: "There's Betu! Quick, grab the will while he is occupied!"
<Betu drops the scroll from his mouth.>
Betu: [Dog Barking]
Mizzik Thunderboots: "Quickly, grab the will!"
Chef Edric Brussiner: "Not now, Betu! Away with you!"

Once you have the Sealed Will, Mizzik will suggest you speak with Chef Edric and ask questions:

"Betu has always been the incorrigible sort. Best not to let him walk all over you.
Apologies. I should introduce myself. My name is Edric Brussiner. I was Lady Weatherleah's cook. A terrible thing, her death. Beyond compare."
Were you close to Lady Weatherleah?
"Yes, terribly so. I've been in her employ for what feels like ages. Which is why I hope you'll listen when I say you must leave the estate. I fear what happened to our dear lady could happen to you!"
What makes you say that?
"Chefs are privy to more than just their employer's favorite dishes. Lady Weatherleah hasn't been the same since her son's disappearance and I am not the only one to take notice. Fruit flies buzz around the sweetest fruit after all."
Do you know what happened to Lady Weatherleah?
"I can't say any more. I only came to pay my respects and to leave this place behind. If I were you, I would stay far away from that manor before that investigator digs up something horrible."
Mizzik and I are here to help.

At this Chef Edric will take his leave and gives a warning:

Chef Edric Brussiner: "If you insist on staying, that's your business. Just watch your back."
<Chef Edric leaves.>
Mizzik Thunderboots: "How strange. Come, let us speak, traveler."

When you meet Chef Edric again, he will be drunk and will be one of the attendees at Mizzik's reading of the will.

Chef Edric will be one of the people in the Manor when Mizzik reads the will. It will comprise of a riddle and Mizzik suggests speaking with the people gathered before meeting with him in the nearby study. Talk with Edtic to see what he has to say:

"The estate feels hollow now without her. And apologies for my appearance. Needed some liquid courage to walk the halls of this corpse. I hope you find who did this. She didn't deserve what happened to her."
Were you close to Lady Weatherleah?
"Closer than most staff are with their lords and ladies I reckon. I'd worked for her since before young Uriel had even been born. Feels like a lifetime ago. More memories to drown I suppose."

When you enter the study, you and Mizzik will search the room. Some of the things you find out is that Lady Aquilia made her own investigation into her son's disappearance, Pelena approached Lady Weatherleah with concerns about Chef Edric Brussiner and an unknown person sent the Lady a warning about a plot. Afterwards, Mizzik will want you to question the Weatherleah family members.

A common link between the three is the mention of Groundskeeper Otho finding Lady Weatherleah's body. Mizzik will suggest speaking with him next, and you can find Groundskeeper Otho in front of the stables, having just finished washing Betu. After speaking with Otho about Lady Weatherleah's death, he suggests you talk to the nearby Edric.

Speaking with him, he will be openly skeptical about Uriel's story and you can ask him about recent events:

"You won't learn anything from those scheming charlatans, that's for sure. Lost memories? Please. Children can weave better stories than that drivel. I'll say it again stranger, you should leave this place. Nothing but rotten memories."
Were you present the day Lady Weatherleah died?
"No. Lady Pelena had all but run me out by then. Lady Weatherleah couldn't bring herself to fire me, but I thought some time away would do us all some good. Worst decision of my life, I'll tell you that."
Why would Pelena run you out?
"It's my own fault, honestly. Something always felt off to me about Lady Pelena. She never seemed too torn up over Uriel's death. I was convinced she was hiding something, but turns out my chef's paunch doesn't make for being stealthy."
What happened?
"She caught me going through her things. A terrible thing, I know, but I don't regret it. Some things deserve to be brought to light. You'll see."

Continue talking to him, you can ask about his investigation:

"I feel so guilty for not being here. Poor Lady Weatherleah."
Do you think Lady Weatherleah's death is related to your investigation?
"I can't stop feeling like it's my fault somehow. Maybe if I hadn't started asking questions. But who knows - maybe Uriel isn't dead after all? Perhaps I should do something about that memorial out back."
A memorial to Uriel?
"Before her death, Lady Weatherleah gave up her search for Uriel. She decided it was time to mourn. I helped her build a memorial to him in the yard."

After investigating the library, you find a Gilded Key and Betu who urges you to follow him. It will lead you to a memorial and Edric's body splayed out in front of it, having apparently killed Lady Weatherleah and committing suicide out of remorse with poison.
