Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Viranus Donton[edit]
When you reach the rank of Protector, you will be directed to Modryn Oreyn in Chorrol for further duties. Your job is to take Viranus Donton—the son of the Guildmaster—on a contract to boost his confidence, without his mother knowing about it. The contract itself is to locate Galtus Previa, who has gone missing in Nonwyll Cavern, northwest of Chorrol.
To find Viranus, cross the street from the Fighters Guild to the Donton house. Viranus will probably be right inside or upstairs in a sitting area. Fill him in about the contract and dissuade him from talking to his mother first, at which point he will become a follower.
Nonwyll Cavern[edit]
With Viranus in tow, travel to Nonwyll Cavern. It is located a short walk up into the hills north of Chorrol's north gate and is populated by an mixture of "savage" Monsters: Ogres, Minotaurs and Trolls. These versions are weaker than the standard version at player levels below 19, 12 and 7 respectively, after which they will be tougher (though Savage Trolls will never possess health regeneration).
If you enter through the main entrance, you will need to pass through the first zone - Nonwyll Cavern - before reaching the second zone - Nonwyll Chamber of the Titans - which is where Galtus can be found (see the place page for more info). There is also a secondary entrance which leads directly to the second zone and allows you to avoid three Savage Trolls in the first zone and up to two further enemies in the second. To find it, keep climbing the mountain trail after you reach the main entrance and press on north past a western fork, which leads to Cloud Top. Once you arrive at a wooden bridge turn southwest and continue downhill for a short while until you reach the entrance.
Either way, be prepared for a series of tough fights, though Viranus will help out and distract some of the enemies. As he is marked as Essential, he cannot actually die, despite Modryn's worry that he might not "come back in one piece". Galtus Previa's body can be found in the northernmost chamber, alongside a Broken Shield which you should pick up and return to Modryn to unlock some additional dialogue lines.
Return to the Fighters Guild in Chorrol and report to Modryn Oreyn. If you picked up the shield and hand it over, he will ominously remark that he recognizes it, but refuses to elaborate further. Modryn will give the contract pay to Viranus Donton, but you will still get one Fame point and also a random type of blade—either dagger, shortsword, longsword, or claymore—with the following attributes and enchantments:

- Despite what Modryn says, it won't do any harm if you do go talk to Vilena Donton about this quest. She will just tell you where to find her son.
- The Broken Shield is a quest item, so if you don't hand it over to Modryn it will remain in your inventory forever.
- Sometimes if you fast travel after leaving the cave, Modryn Oreyn loses some of his gear.
- Sometimes the quest will not realize you have arrived at the cave.

- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage FGD03Viranus stage
, where stage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
