Kellen

Kellen is a Redguard commoner added by the Knights of the Nine official download. He can be found at the Chapel of Stendarr in Chorrol, where he is involved in the quest Stendarr's Mercy. He is a descendant of Sir Casimir. Although his ancestor was from Cyrodiil, Kellen seems to have come from Hammerfell to seek the care of those working at the chapel in Chorrol.

Kellen wears a collared shirt, green felt linens and a pair of buckled shoes.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

You will first hear about Kellen indirectly from his ancestor Sir Casimir, when you sends you to quest for the Gauntlets of the Crusader and tells you about his curse:

Curse
"It was placed on me for defying the teachings of Stendarr in his very Chapel. My entire lineage was ruined by this curse."

Kellen can be found sat on his bed in the Chapel Hall. He spends all day there yawning, only taking a small break from 12pm to 2pm to see if he can find any food to eat. He never sleeps due to a bug. If you speak to him he before the related quest he will say:

"Please, leave me be. I've no interest in visitors. I'm far too weak."

If you speak to him before speaking to Areldur, he says:

"Please, leave me be. I need rest..."
Gauntlets of the Crusader
"You've seen them, I assume. The only evidence of what happened so many years ago. Do you know that I thought perhaps I could lift them? That somehow this curse would be lifted if I could pick them up? I tried for hours. Until my whole body ached, and I could barely move. I lay there on the floor next to them, weeping. I'm not ashamed to admit that. I've been at the end of my rope for far too long to be ashamed of anything."

If asked again, he'll repeat:

Gauntlets of the Crusader
"I don't know why they're still here. They're so heavy, and I'm so weak. What does Stendarr want from me?"

Speaking to Areldur will provide you with some more background:

"A great many years ago, a knight of the old Order did something terrible, and the gauntlets just fell off. They dropped to the floor right where he stood, and no one could lift them. It was a sign of the curse placed upon this knight by Stendarr, I think. That curse still lingers on today, in fact. Poor Kellen."
Who is Kellen?
"Oh, why he's a descendant of that very knight from so long ago. The curse has affected his family all these years. He suffers from it now. He came here from Hammerfell seeking a cure, but, ahh... well, there's really nothing that can be done for him, I think. He may know more of the story than I. Perhaps you should speak with him, if he's feeling well enough."

You can ask Areldur more questions:

Curse
"It's a horrible thing, truly. One cannot help but pity those such as Kellen, who have such a burden placed on them through no fault of their own. But... But if it is the will of the Nine, then there is little that can be done."
Kellen
"He's down in the Chapel Hall, resting. You may speak to him, if you like."

If you return to Kellen now, he will greet you with:

"What is it? Is there a cure? Has Areldur found a cure? I know there's something he's not telling me!"
Curse
"Ah, so you've heard it, have you? Terrible curse, been in the family almost longer than anyone can remember. When I was younger, I could live with it. Wasn't so bad. But it's only gotten worse over time. I'd come here, to the place it all happened, in the hopes that something could be done. I fear I haven't much time left, otherwise. Areldur has let me stay, mostly out of pity I think, but there's something else. I swear he knows more than he tells."
Areldur
"I've seen plenty of pity in peoples' eyes over the years. I grew up recognizing it. But with Areldur... There's something else there. And when he speaks to me, there are times I'd swear he sounds... Apologetic. Guilty, even. Why would that be? What reason does he have to hold back information? I know I'm a doomed man, one way or the other. Speak to him, if you can. Convince him to tell me what he knows, as a dying man's last wish."

Speaking to him again will net you:

"Have you talked to Areldur? What news is there of lifting this curse?"

Return to Areldur, who will confess:

Kellen
"I... I cannot face him. I know what might be done for him, but I haven't the will to do it. I wish I could help him, truly I do, but I cannot muster the strength to damn myself on his behalf!"
What are you talking about?
"The curse... I know what would lift it. But I cannot do it. The only way to free Kellen of his curse is to take it on myself. I am not strong enough to do this, and so I am a failure. I fail Kellen every time I speak to him, and I fail Stendarr every time I pray to him and do not ask for the power to lift the curse. Do you know one who would do such a thing? One who would pray at this Chapel's altar, pray to Stendarr for the power to lift this curse?"

Armed with this knowledge, you can return to Kellen, who will now greet you with:

"You've spoken to him, haven't you. And... And he's told you something you don't want to tell me. I need someone to please tell me what's going on. Please, help me. Have mercy on me."

Engaging in again in conversation will net you another plea and you will need to choose whether to lie to Kellen or not:

"Will you please tell me what Areldur has said about this curse?"
Curse
"So, what can be done for me? I know you've learned something. I can see it in your face."
[Lie] There's no way to save you.
"Really. I see. Then I've no choice but to live out the rest of my days here, I suppose. After all this time, I can't help but hope just a little bit. Hope that somehow there might be a way to save myself."
There is a way to lift the curse.
"So someone could only lift the curse from me by taking it on themselves? No wonder Areldur didn't tell me. I'm not sure whether to call him a coward, or simply say that I don't blame him. That'd be a large burden to bear. Thank you for being honest with me."

Asking him about the curse now will net you different results depending on whether you respectively told the truth or lied:

Curse
"I'm not sure how I feel. To know that the curse can be lifted gives me hope, but to know that it also means damning another... Would someone taking that responsibility be merciful, or suicidal?"
"Even if I am doomed, I still hold out hope that Stendarr will have mercy on me."

Speaking to him again will net you:

"Thank you for speaking to Areldur on my behalf."

Once you agree to take on the curse and thus obtained Stendarr's Blessing, he will wryly remark:

"Come to see the doomed man, have you?"

After you cured Kellen:

"You... How did you... I feel good. I feel GOOD! I don't feel like death! I feel like... running!"

At this point he will start running around the Chapel Hall will shouting: "Ha ha ha!" and "Look at me!" Speaking to him now will net you:

"I can't believe it! I feel normal! Thank you so much! You have no idea what this means to me!"

Which is then followed by different lines depending on whether you lifted the curse with or without speaking to Kellen about it respectively:

"I know what you've done to free me from this curse. I don't claim to understand why you'd take it on yourself, but I appreciate it. It means more to me than I can say. Now, I think I need to start living my life. I'm going to get out of here and see the world. Thank you, friend."
"I finally have a chance to get out and see the world. I'm not wasting another second of my life. And I'm forever indebted to you, friend. Farewell!"

After a few laps, he will start off on his new schedule of travelling across Cyrodiil. If it is not Morndas, Middas or Fredas he will stand around until the clock strikes midnight on one of those days, at which point he begins travelling between all cities except the Imperial City and staying at the local inn, in this order:

Once the quest is complete, you will hear citizens of Chorrol remark

"Someone was able to lift the curse from that poor man at the Chapel."
"What a noble thing to do. I'm glad he'll finally have peace."

Notes[edit]

  • Kellen's stats are all quite low and correspond to the default settings when creating a new NPC in the Construction Set: all skills set to 5, all Attributes set to 50 (except Personality, which is 40) and each of health, magicka and fatigue set to 50.
  • Kellen has an unused dialogue line about Sir Casimir, which you will never hear as the topic never appears: "So you know that name, do you? I spit on his memory. It's his fault I'm here, barely able to get out of bed. It's his fault my father died thirty years before his time."

Bugs[edit]

  • There are additional rumors that could have been heard about Kellen, but the conditions for the first two are set for after you have lifted the curse, while the two responses are set for before the curse is lifted.
"There's a man at the Chorrol Chapel, living in the undercroft. I heard he's dying of something."
"Have you seen that poor man staying in the Chapel Hall? I heard he's under some sort of curse."
"He came here all the way from Hammerfell, didn't he? He must be very ill."
"I heard there's nothing the priests can do for him. Poor man."
  • Kellen was meant to sleep from 8pm to 10am, but as the reference for the package tells him to sit down, he entirely skips this. ?
