Organisation[edit]

Per the wikify tag at the top of this article, I thought to myself a good place to get stuck into helping this wiki would be to try to organise this article. As it was before my edit it was informative, for the most part, but now I've cleaned it up, at least a little. I've tried to categorise the bugs by type - "graphics", "map", for example, as you'll notice, and I've also tried to break down each bug into a coherent symptom / description / fix format - though some bugs need a little more information, and I didn't get all the way through editing.

If anyone has feed back, feel free to drop me a note, either here or on my talk page. Glenmorial 01:43, 16 May 2009 (EDT)

Skills releated bugs[edit]

Bug summary:[edit]

Let's have a skill X = 100. Let's have that skill fortified with ability fortify SKILL + 20 for example. Now 120/120. Let's read a skill book, with our SKILL skill increment. There is bug, the SKILL 120/120 is now a strange 120/100. Now after our fortify SKILL ability is gone, we have 100/80. Which is indeed far above strange. Now you can use Fury for example, which could reset some of your skills to normal by draining it (common bug fortify + drain - fortify - drain = damaged), or you can now train your skill up to 120/100 once again.

Retraceable steps[edit]

Heavy armor is not calculated correctly when: you have havy armor = 100 AND you subsequently became a vampire quarra. You now have heavy armor = 120. Read a heavy armor skill book to recieve skill increment message. By now there is already one bug: the heavy armor is at 120/100 instead of 120/120. It is also hihglighted, making it a sign of fortify instead of ability. Next get cured and observe to have heavy armor at 100/80 because I had 100 highlighted and got trained it above 114 still highlighted. Possible fix (removes highlight): console command set or Fury sword. Note that this bug is releated to all skills, fortified with abilities under same circuministances. Blunt weapon is the same, athletics is the same, sneak is the same, ...

Dagger[edit]

When I take the first dagger in the game, when creating the character, the computer is restarted. Is that normal? --88.22.228.174 11:30, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Definitely not normal. Try re-installing the game, or installing Tribunal or Bloodmoon if you have them. If you're on PC, make sure all your component dirvers are up to date, or turn down all the visual settings. -Itachi 15:07, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

I've turned down the visual settings and now it's perfect, thanks. I'm playing on an old XP, but I have a windows vista. There would be any problem if I play on it?--79.155.118.163 08:48, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

You mean you have another computer with Windows Vista on it? Since that means that computer is fast enough to support Windows Vista I think you won't have problems running Morrowind on it, even on higher visual settings. --Timenn-<talk> 09:59, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

getflee CTD[edit]

I was testing the effect of intimidate on flee levels (specifically using the female argonian slave inside the cavern near the seyda neen silt strider) by boosting my speechcraft to 100 with player->setspeechcraft 100, using getflee on my test subject, intimidating them until a success then using getflee again, tried twice, CTD both times on the second getflee. anyone else notice this? 86.147.74.18 01:21, 21 September 2013 (GMT)

update, was being stupid, conditions do not matter, problem was in using getflee with no target in the console, I was clicking the argonian again to select her while she was already selected... this made the getflee call have no target, thus CTD 86.147.74.18 01:27, 21 September 2013 (GMT)

Character permanently paralysed[edit]

I've gotten to the point in the main quest where the Ashkhan of the Urshilaku ashlanders sends you out to Kogoruhn to collect three items... Anyway, I was fighting I think Dagoth Gares (an ascended sleeper) in one of the bulidings, and he paralysed me. My chraracter stayed paralysed, even when the effect wore off. I think I may have turned on god mode and it might have affected the save? my last one before then was an autosave ages back.. I tried to resurrect my character, but he just stayed on the ground. Next I disabled Dagoth Gares and rested.. still paralysed. Next I used fixme and tcl, neither of which worked. I tried to coc to a different place, also didn't work. I can't equip new weapons either because I'm apparently in the middle of an attack. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm playing the GOTY edition, with Tribunal and Bloodmoon installed but not activated, on a Windows 7 64-bit laptop.

Save Games Not Loading[edit]

I am playing a heavily modded version of Morrowind, and my game crashes as soon as I load any save game. I have tried removing mods, but this does not seem to help the problem. I was wondering if anyone else has had this same bug. 173.74.237.95 14:24, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Needs para. on patching projects[edit]

This would greatly benefit from a short section on patching projects, wikilinked to the articles on both MCP and CPP. The site has resources on this, but they are not mentioned here which is confusing. Would just fix this myself, but have to run. May do it later. — Darklocq  ¢ 02:34, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

Using any change weapon key when all your weapons are broken crashes the game[edit]

If your weapons are all broken and you're down to your fists, using the change weapon key will crash the game.

Not Saving Error[edit]

So my game starting giving errors while saving. Something about the temp file not being able to rename. I tried several different names unsuccessfully, then looked for the save folder. It was in C:\Users\brf\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Saves\ and there were 505 files in there. I moved most of them to a different folder, and then it was able to save successfully. Brf (talk) 03:51, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Console not Working (Tilde Key or similar problems) - Workaround[edit]

... So.

After years of not touching Morrowind or gaming in general, I finally decided to give this old little gem another try.

Normal GOT GOG Edition. Not using OpenMW. Run-of-the-mill simple old-school experience, for old time's sake.

To my surprise, console was not opening up when I tried pressing the tilde key, and all that jazz. Never had this problem before; searched for it a little bit; read all I could about it to resolve it; again, all that jazz everybody complains about when dealing with this annoying situation.

And annoying indeed it is - Morrowind is a great but old and janky as hell piece of gaming. It is a true test of patience trying to play this game on PC without making full use of the console when things start falling apart.

In brief, I managed to find a solution to make the console fully functional again.

I'll leave it as a guide of sorts on this discussion session. I wrote it initially thinking of editing it right into the main article, but formatting be dammned. If everyone is willing - mods, anyone really -, go ahead and make the necessary editing in order for it to be sound and nicely displayed on the main article, if deemed worthy enough.

May this be my small contribution to this community, who loves TES III as much as I do.

Wealth beyond measure, fellow muthseras and n'wahs.

Morrowind players looking to circumvent the aforementined problems with opening their consoles, but are unwilling to dabble in uninstalling drivers from their own PCs (at the risk of messing up their operational systems), and are not currently using OpenMW, can try a four-way solution using the following programs and mods, to be installed in the same order as they appear on the list below:

  • MGE XE + Morrowind Script Extender
  • Morrowind Code Patch
  • UI Expansion Console Mod
  • Blue - Smart Console Mod

1. The first step is to download and install the latest version of MGE XE with Morrowind Script Extender checked to be simultaneously installed with it. Fire it up, and look for it's Key Remapper option. From there it will be possible to change the tilde key's keybinding to any other key not being currently used in your Morrowind play. The F keys make up for good candidates, e.g., F3. Make sure to save your changes before closing it. - Make sure to also check the option for having MGE XE always running behind your gameplay session. Keep enabled or disable any other feature you might be interested to have in your game; the Remapper function is the only one to be used that is necessary for this workaround.

2. Download and install the Morrowind Code Patch. Enable or disable any features as you see fit. Run the patch. Close MCP window after you're finished. - After remapping your keys and patching your game, launch Morrowind in order to check whether the keybinding swap is working properly or not. If not, try remapping the tilde key to other keys, until you can finally open up the console in your gameplay session.

If the remapping is done correctly, then congratulations - you'll finally be able to open and use the console again. However, at a limited capacity. You won't be able - yet - to use the remapped tilde key to produce the quotes and double-quotes necessary for a lot of Morrowind's console commands to be written and worked with ('additem' being a notoriously example of a command requiring IDs to be inside of a pair of double-quotes to effectively run).

But you're halfway there. For this, you'll need to follow two more steps:

3. Download and install UI expansion mod. Simply drop its files on the Data Files folder for a quick install. This mod gives more agency to the player to deal with the game's user interface; that means not only the game's menus - but also the console itself.

4. Lastly, download and install Blue - Smart Console Mod. As before, simply drop its files on the Data Files folder. What this mod does is offering quick suggestions of commands to the player, when writing texts on the console, as to speed up the typing process. With it properly installed and working, open the console. Write a command line that requires double-quotes for it to work, e.g., player->additem. Use TAB to choose from the selection range of suggestions the mod gives you.

Then, just choose one command suggestion displayed with double-quotes. Press enter, and the command - with double-quotes characters included - will be displayed on your console typing box.

There you go. Edit or change the command according to your needs, just making sure to not delete the double-quotes in the process, or you have to redo the command suggestion selection.

Enjoy having the full power of CHIM once again at the tip of your fingers!

Side Note: As of this writing, all mentioned mods are fully available to download at Nexus Mods.
