Feather M points for D seconds

Reduces the target's encumbrance by M points, thus allowing them to carry more without becoming encumbered. Your Fatigue will also drain more slowly. Feather can make your encumbrance value become negative, though it will still be displayed as 0, and there will be no noticeable benefit to it, other than that you can pick up more objects before the value becomes positive again and starts to weigh you down.

Notes[edit]

  • In general, Feather is inferior to Fortify Strength for increasing your item-carrying capacity. Though both effects have the same base cost, every 1 additional point in strength increases your maximum encumbrance by 5 points, thus making Fortify Strength five times more effective than Feather and raising your melee damage in the bargain. Feather may yet be preferable when your encumbrance is already low, however— reducing it towards zero enables you to run faster, jump higher, and last longer, as these are determined by the encumbrance ratio rather than the magnitude. Feather is also still useful if your character is skilled in Alteration but not Restoration.

Bugs[edit]

  • It is possible that when loading a saved file, a Feather effect on your character will cease to reduce your encumbrance. Extra weight will still be dumped on you when the duration of the effect expires, and as a result you'll still have a non-zero encumbrance rating even when holding no items. If this happens to your character, it can be fixed by using the following console commands:
    • player->additem "misc_com_bottle_01" 1 (any item will work, but this bottle weighs 1.0 and is unlikely to be in most players' inventories.)
    • player->removeitem "misc_com_bottle_01" n (where n is the amount of excess encumbrance plus 1)
