"The Lord of Ash and Bone doesn't care for any of us. This worship of him is folly and will be the ruin of us all.[…]
Both sides are blind to the strings that make them dance.
That is all we are to the Daedra. Playthings for their amusement. Their gifts are poisoned. To think otherwise is foolish. Yet we live in a world of fools, each thinking they are somehow different. Somehow special. We kill and we die for this belief, while the Daedra smile on.
" —Malacath and the Reach

Kyrtos was a Reachfolk Briarheart warrior of the Winterborn Clan and a descendant of ancient clan leaders Mercedne and Evandene Tusk Collector. He worked to stop the violence between the Winterborn and the Orsimer and attmepted to prevent Winterborn raids in the Orc occupied territories.[1][2] He penned Malacath and the Reach and was a staunch opponent of Daedra worship.[3]

History[edit]

Hiding place of the Vengeful Eye

Kyrtos was a member of the Winterborn clan. At some point he became a Briarheart,[1] whose role was to protect his clan and kin.[4]

In 2E 582, during the conflict between the Winterborn and King Kurog's forces, before the siege of the Frostbreak Fortress one of the groups of the Winterborn ventured to the Honor's Rest to obtain the Vengeful Eye.[1][5]

Kyrtos was among the group sent to retrieve the artifact, however, he planned to work against the clan to prevent the bloodshed. Winterborn planned to obtain the artifact and begin their Vengeful March - burning and razing Orcish strongholds one after another. Kyrtos intended to prevent this but feared that if he touched the relic his involvement could be recognized by the Hagravens of the clan.[1] The Orc priests of the Malacath shrine also believed that the relic should not be touched by any of the Winterborn.[5]

Due to that, the Briarheart sided with an adventurer to handle the relic in order to prevent his clan from obtaining the relic. His ally managed to retrieve the amulet before other members of the Winterborn found it. It is unclear whether the artifact was given to the Priests of Malacath in Orsinium, destroyed, or if the Kyrtos' ally took it to a shrine of Malacath and received Malacath's favor and blessing to keep the amulet. It is however known that the Vengeful March was prevented and that Winterborn failed to retrieve the relic. Little is known of the future of Kyrtos, but after the successful sabotage, he returned to his people.[2][6]

Despite his actions that foiled his clan's goals and their differences in beliefs he considered himself one of the Winterborn and could not abandon them.[1] He believed that the conflict between the Reachfolk and the Orcs about the ownership of the Vengeful Eye was the cause of the needless bloodshed for centuries.[3] He considered the tribe to be his home and his family, though he pondered whether it is his personal decision or something imposed during the Briarheart ritual.[1]
