Richard Lambert is the Game Director & Creative Director at ZeniMax Online Studios for The Elder Scrolls Online. He started as a Lead Content Designer for seven years, before taking over the role of Creative Director from Paul Sage in 2015.[1] Jeremy Sera succeeded Lambert as Lead Content Designer.
The Elder Scrolls[edit]
Lambert began his career in game development in 1995 as a Lead Tester at Electronic Arts Canada, and eventually moving onto ecMarket in 2001 as a Senior Quality Assurance Tester. In March 2005, Lambert joined Bethesda Softworks as a Producer, a role he maintained until July 2007.[1]
Lambert joined the newly formed ZeniMax Online Studios in July 2007, where he began as a Lead Content Designer on their then-unannounced MMO The Elder Scrolls Online. In June 2014, he was promoted to Creative Director,[1] eventually taking on the full responsibilities of the role from Paul Sage after his departure from the company in June 2015.[2] Lambert was officially introduced as the new Creative Director at ESO's QuakeCon 2015 presentation.[3] His first project as Creative Director was the Orsinium DLC, which he reflects on as being one of his favorite expansions as the team had learned a lot building it.[4]
In an interview from August 2022, amid similar reports regarding ZeniMax employees being crunched for time while working on Fallout 76, Lambert acknowledged that for The Elder Scrolls Online there was some crunch for developers towards the end of a release cycle. He stated that as managers, they'd come to realize their mistake and learned to manage their expectations going forward,[5] as reflected in Matt Firor's statements about slightly pulling back on development to prioritize the health and safety of their employees.[6] In January 2022, Lambert was involved in a controversy with the game's PvP community after comments from a livestream featuring him and his wife were seen as disparaging to players voicing their concerns about the game.[7]
Lambert was promoted to Game Director in July 2024, seemingly taking over the role from Matt Firor. Lambert remains on as the game's Creative Director as well.[1]
