Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
The Recruited Watchman[edit]
After the first time you spend a night lodged at The Restful Watchman, you will be greeted as you exit by an excitable nord: Olaf Cold-Heart. He asks for your help in rescuing a dear friend of his, Caius, who has gone missing. Once you accept, he will ask you to meet him at a camp near the Ayleid ruin of Sedor before sprinting off.
To reach Olaf's camp from Bruma, head to the Eastern Watchtower and then take the road south, pressing on past Toadstool Hollow. Once you arrive at Greenwood, head east and cross the river using the wooden planks over the ruined Ayleid bridge. The dirt track on the opposite end carries you past Anga and a minotaur camp. Keep pressing east, past The Beast's Maw and Lakeside Retreat, and along the lake road heading east. Follow this as it winds up the mountain face to the north and then head east at Silver Tooth Cave. Here you will be greeted by an armored Olaf and two of his Nord companions.
The Sly Stormcloak[edit]
If you question Olaf on the situation instead of just rushing in, his cover story will quickly begin to unravel. It turns out that he doesn't really care about Caius, because he isn't really a friend of Olaf's, he's an Imperial Legion courier. Olaf confesses that he and his companions are Stormcloaks and it is clear that what they are really after are the documents Caius was carrying. You can either decide to turn a blind eye to his sympathies or to tell Olaf you don't like Stormcloaks, in which case you have two options:
- Warning him to back off (no Speech challenge is required) causes him to immediately lose heart and sprint down the mountain with his companions in tow.
- Telling him it's time to die will cause him to attack you, though oddly his companions will side with you in the fight.
Whichever option you choose, you will then be directed to find Caius inside Sedor.
The ruin is populated by a number of bandits, which you will have to fight through to reach the final room with the ringleader. See the place page for a detailed walkthrough. As you progress throughout the corridors, Olaf will make clear his fear of Ayleid ruins. Once you defeat the bandit boss, a quick search of their room will reveal a cell with Caius's naked corpse. Loot the note from his body and speak to Olaf. He is frustrated the documents aren't on Caius's person and asks you to find them as they lie scattered across the ruin. The List of Stormcloak Sympathizers is in the same room; The Skyrim Report, Part II is on a table in the room just below; parts III and IV are in the room with bedrolls and part I is on a table in the very first room. Once you have them all make your way towards the exit, accompanied by Olaf's warning that he's worried other bandits may return to their base after raiding in the wilderness. Sure enough, you will soon be ambushed by bandit leader Brecius the Pillager and three of his thugs. Kill them and leave the ruin.
A Courier with a Choice[edit]
If Olaf is still alive, he will ask you to hand over the documents. If you agree, he will hand over some leveled gold (the lowest amount of all choices) and run off. Alternatively, you can either intimidate or persuade him that you will take the documents to his contact (requires passing an Easy speech challenge) or kill him. In both instances, and if you had previously killed Olaf, you will now be faced with four choices in increasing order of monetary reward:
- Burning the documents in one of the braziers in Bruma, which will net you no reward;
- Taking the documents to Stormcloak contact Ungveir in one of the outlying towers of Fort Pale Pass, in return for some leveled gold and a leveled weapon;
- Taking the documents to Penitus Oculatus undercover agent Servus Vodaci at The Restful Watchman, in return for some leveled gold and a leveled enchanted weapon;
- Taking the documents to Thalmor justiciar Armion, in return for some leveled gold.
Levels | Olaf | Servus / Ungveir |
Armion |
---|---|---|---|
1–9 | 250 | 400 | 750 |
10–19 | 400 | 600 | 1,000 |
20–29 | 500 | 800 | 1,250 |
30–39 | 600 | 1,000 | 1,500 |
40+ | 750 | 1,200 | 1,800 |
Notes[edit]
- If you have completed Service Rewarded, depending on the ending, Armion may no longer be in Bruma. This means you will not be able to pursue option 4 above.

100 | After spending a night at Bruma's Restful Watchman tavern I was approached by a boisterous Nord by the name of Olaf Cold-Heart. I agreed to help him rescue a friend - I should meet him at his camp east of the Ayleid ruin of Sedor to begin. He warned me to come ready for a fight.
Objective 100: Meet Olaf near Sedor
Objective 150: Talk to Olaf

199 | I agreed to help a young Nord, Olaf Cold-Heart, rescue his friend from captivity in the Ayleid ruin of Sedor. However, arriving at Olaf's makeshift camp outside the old structure, I discovered that Olaf is, in fact, a Stormcloak sympathizer. I chose not to spare him, and now he's attacking me. I must defend myself.
Objective 199: Kill Olaf

250 | It turns out that Olaf's friend is dead and his documents are scattered about the ruin. I'd best search for them if I want to figure out what's going on here. 360 | I agreed to help a young Nord, Olaf Cold-Heart, rescue his friend from captivity in the Ayleid ruin of Sedor. His friend, Caius, was dead, but we found his documents and escaped the bandits. I agreed to give the documents to Olaf, despite his dubious connections to Skyrim's Stormcloak insurrection, and he rewarded me with coin. | |
399 | I refused to give Caius's documents to Olaf Cold-Heart, and he is now attacking me. I must defend myself. | |
400 | With Olaf out of the picture, I now have a decision to make: what should I do with Caius's documents - the contents of which are extremely sensitive. I could deliver them to a Stormcloak agent, I could locate an agent of the Imperials, or I could hand them over to Armion, the Thalmor's agent in Bruma. Alternatively, I could burn the documents. This choice is mine to make.
Objective 400: Burn the documents at a bonfire in Bruma OR Deliver documents to the Thalmor OR Deliver documents to an Imperial agent OR Deliver documents to a Stormcloak agent

500 | I had to decide what to do with the documents I found in Sedor. Ultimately, I chose to deliver them to Ungveir, the Stormcloak contact waiting at Pale Pass. He rewarded me for my delivery - though it's difficult to foresee the consequences my actions may have in the weeks to come. | |

998 | After spending a night at Bruma's Restful Watchman tavern I was approached by a boisterous Nord by the name of Olaf Cold-Heart. I agreed to help him rescue a friend. Sadly, Olaf died before I could learn anything relevant. |

) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game. - Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
