Bess works on board The Gilded Duckling in Bravil Docks

Bess is an Imperial commoner who serves Duke Agrivaine and Duchess Giselle and their guests on board The Gilded Duckling, a ship moored in the Bravil Docks. She mostly serves the duchess, and is quite happy with her job. She was born in Kvatch, but moved to Summerset Isle with her parents 15 years ago.

Bess rises at 9am every morning and eats breakfast for an hour. She then heads up to the Duckling's mid deck to tend to her duties until 5pm, when she goes to the captain's cabin to tidy up. She works there until 2am, when she heads back to her bed on the lower deck.

Bess wears livery in the duke's colours (gold and brown) and quilted shoes; she carries a key to the ship and oranges for snacking.

Bess is very polite and willing to help with information if she can, though she's a bit daft:

• Her job: "Oh I'm just the maid! I keep the mid-deck and dining-deck clean and tidy. Mostly I stay close to Duchess Giselle in case she needs me."
• The captain: "The Duke is the captain. He doesn't like having a proper captain on board giving the orders, so he takes charge himself when on voyages. He's very good at it!"
• The Duke: "The Duke is named Agrivaine. I spend most of my time attending to Duchess Giselle though. She is so nice!"
• The ship: "This ship? It belongs to the Duke. He has two or three ships, this one is called the Guild of Ducklings. Or something like that."

Notes

• After completing the quest Strange Bedfellows, if The Gilded Duckling has sailed away from Bravil, it will no longer be possible to meet Bess.
