Borderwatch (also spelled Border Watch) is a settlement in Blackwood along Cyrodiil's Green Road between Leyawiin and Bravil, close to the Anequina border.[1]
History[edit]
The settlement was extant prior to 2E 582, with the fort having been built over an Ayleid ruin by an unnamed architect. Her tomb in the crypts marked the entrance to the ruins.[2] There were gatehouses on the Green Road into the Nibenay Valley and on the road into Anequina.[1] The Ivory Brigade garrisoned the fort and kept watch for possible incursions into Blackwood from the Three Banners War.[3] However, they were driven out by a mercenary outfit called the Painted Eye who posed as revolutionaries, taking civilian hostages and drawing up a list of unrealistic political demands.[4] This dissuaded the Ivory Brigade from counterattacking and the fort's commanding officer, Commander Axius, asked the Vestige to infiltrate the fort.
With the help of two Thieves Guild members, the Vestige was able to rescue the hostages and discovered the Painted Eye were trying to acquire and use the same powerful Ayleid artifact the Thieves Guild were hired to recover.[5] The ritual was successfully stopped and the Painted Eye leader was killed.[5] The Ivory Brigade planned to retake the fort later and the broken relic was sold to an undisclosed Altmer buyer.[6][7] Axius may have later sent soldiers to help defend Fort Redmane against the Order of the Waking Flame.[8]
Circa 3E 433, no trace of the fort remained and the village was occupied by a superstitious community of Khajiit ministered by their shaman Ri'Bassa. The villagers believed in the K'Sharra Prophecy, a prediction made by their forefathers that foretold the end of the world. There were three parts to the prophecy: the Plague of Vermin, the Plague of Famine, and the Plague of Fear.[9] Finding the village to be dull, Sheogorath tasked the Hero of Kvatch with carrying out the first two prophecies by attracting vermin and killing all the livestock. Sheogorath then unleashed a rain of burning dogs to fulfill the final prophecy, which sent the villagers into a frenzied panic.[10] The rest of Cyrodiil looked upon the strange happenings in Borderwatch with bemusement.[11]
